Brand:

Flowserve Worthington HED API 610 BB2 Two-Stage Pump

Description

Flowserve HED API 610 BB2 two-stage pump: what it is

The Flowserve HED is a two-stage, radially split pump of the API 610 BB2 type, sold under the Worthington name together with its sister model HED-DS. Two impellers in series on one shaft raise the head far beyond what a single stage can reach, while the radially split casing, with its parting plane perpendicular to the shaft, is the construction preferred for high pressures and high temperatures.

Seven Star LLC supplies Flowserve HED pumps in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat. The HED is a series: pump size, materials, nozzle arrangement and sealing are set from the duty. This page summarises the published range and the data we need to prepare a quotation.

How the HED two-stage radially split design works

Liquid enters the first-stage impeller, gains energy, and is carried to the second stage, which adds a second increment of head. The staged build allows the HED to generate high differential pressure at moderate shaft speed, which is easier on the rotor than a single very large impeller.

The casing is heavy-duty and may be single or dual volute, with the volutes arranged in a staggered pattern. This staggering evens out the radial force on the rotor, which the product page lists as a feature for radial balance. The stiff shaft is designed to operate below its first critical speed, which keeps vibration low across the operating range and protects the mechanical seal faces.

HED nozzle configurations and the HED-DS variant

Item Meaning
Top-top Suction and discharge nozzles both on top of the casing
Side-top Suction on the side, discharge on top
Side-side Suction and discharge both on the side
HED Two-stage radially split BB2 pump
HED-DS Double-suction two-stage version for lower NPSH requirement

The best arrangement depends on how the piping approaches the pump and on plant layout, and the centreline mounting of the casing is intended to suit high-temperature operation. The nozzle-loading capability is described as going beyond API 610 limits, which gives piping designers more freedom.

Where the HED fits and related Flowserve pumps

The HED sits between single-stage process pumps and the multistage barrel or axially split designs. When the head you need is higher or pressures reach very high values, the multistage DMX axially split pump is the usual next step. For lower-pressure, large-volume water transfer, the LNN double-suction axially split pump is a better fit. The UZDL is a two-stage axially split alternative for pipeline duty at up to 64 bar.

Choosing between these depends on temperature, pressure, nozzle loading and the maintenance philosophy of the site. A radially split case like the HED is generally preferred for hot hydrocarbon service.

Selection and ordering checklist for the HED

  • Process liquid, specific gravity, viscosity and vapour pressure at pumping temperature
  • Rated flow, differential head and the allowable operating range
  • NPSH available, which decides between HED and HED-DS
  • Maximum casing temperature and design pressure including relief or shut-off conditions
  • Nozzle arrangement: top-top, side-top or side-side, and flange class
  • Materials per API 610 material class and any sour-service requirement
  • API 682 seal type and plan, plus bearing lubrication and cooling choice
  • Driver type, speed and supply frequency (50 or 60 Hz)

HED installation, commissioning and maintenance

Because the HED runs at high temperature and pressure, installation quality has a direct effect on reliability. Support the piping so nozzle loads stay within the allowable limits, align the coupling with allowance for thermal growth, and warm the pump slowly with a controlled warm-up flow to avoid thermal shock. Check seal flush and cooling lines before the first start and confirm the direction of rotation uncoupled.

In service, track vibration, bearing temperature, seal leakage and differential pressure. A rise in vibration or a drop in head can indicate wear-ring clearance growth or an operating point far from best efficiency. Plan spare mechanical seals, wear rings, bearings and gaskets in advance, and send the nameplate data when ordering parts so the correct build can be identified.

HED applications in Oman and the GCC

Heavy-duty process pumps are used throughout the region in refinery and gas-processing units, in oil-export and transfer systems, and in power and utility plants. The HED is positioned for high-temperature process service and utility duties in oil and gas, covering upstream production, midstream transportation and downstream processing.

Gulf conditions add their own demands: high ambient temperature affects bearing cooling and auxiliary systems, and dust and humidity must be considered for electrical equipment and lubricant condition. Specify the climate and location in the enquiry so cooling, oil selection and coatings are suited to the site.

Information to send with a HED RFQ

  • Existing nameplate photo, or the full duty data sheet for a new pump
  • Pump designation (HED or HED-DS), size and number of units
  • Seal arrangement, flush plan and bearing preference
  • Nozzle arrangement and flange rating
  • Whether a baseplate, coupling, driver or spare parts are included
  • Delivery location and required timeline

Documents and quotation

Send the HED model, size and duty data and we will confirm which documents are available and prepare a quotation. Seven Star LLC acts as an independent supplier in Muscat and is not the manufacturer.

Please mention the application and site temperature so that the correct materials and seal arrangement can be discussed before the quotation is issued.

FAQ

Questions about the Flowserve Worthington HED API 610 BB2 Two-Stage Pump

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the Worthington HED pump?
The HED is a two-stage, centreline-mounted, radially split between-bearings pump built to the ISO 13709 / API 610 BB2 pump type. It is intended for heavy-duty process service where pressure and temperature are high and a robust, fully API-style casing is required.
02What is the difference between HED and HED-DS?
Both appear on the same product page. According to Flowserve literature, HED-DS is the double-suction two-stage version, which lowers the NPSH requirement of the first stage. Confirm which one your duty needs when you submit the hydraulic data.
03What operating limits are published for the HED?
The product page lists flows to 2000 m3/h (8800 gpm), heads to 650 m (2100 ft), pressures to 120 bar (1750 psi) and temperatures to 450 C (842 F), in sizes from 2 in to 12 in. These are envelope values, so the specific pump size must be selected against its own curve.
04Which nozzle arrangements are available?
Three configurations are listed: top-top, side-top and side-side, referring to the positions of the suction and discharge nozzles. The choice depends on piping routing and on how the casing is supported for hot service.
05Does the HED accept API 682 mechanical seals?
Yes. The pump uses seal chambers conforming to ISO 21049 / API 682, which accommodate cartridge-type single and dual seals. Specify the seal arrangement and flush plan in the enquiry so the chamber and piping are correct.
