Alfa Laval M Gear Hygienic Gear Pump

Description

Alfa Laval M Gear hygienic gear pump basics

The Alfa Laval M Gear is a compact stainless steel positive displacement gear pump for moving low volumes of clean fluid in hygienic and industrial filling applications. It is used for dosing, sampling and bulk filling, and it is easy to adapt to OEM filling machines. Seven Star LLC supplies M Gear pumps in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Three models, with different pump head sizes, cover flow rates up to 1500 l/h, differential pressures up to 7 bar and temperatures up to 60°C. The pump runs at up to 1360 rpm. This page explains how to size it, how it works and what to keep as spares.

How the M Gear pump works

Two multi-lobe gears turn against each other in a fully swept chamber. As the teeth disengage on the inlet side a cavity opens and fills with fluid, and the fluid is carried round the housing wall. On the outlet side the teeth mesh again, closing the cavity and pushing the fluid out. Because the displaced volume per revolution is nearly fixed, output follows speed closely, which is why gear pumps suit dosing and precise filling.

The gears sit between PTFE bush bearings inside the main body, which keeps alignment accurate and supports efficient operation. As the pump can run in either direction, the flow can be reversed without modification, which is useful for emptying lines or recirculation.

M Gear in the system and related Alfa Laval pumps

M Gear is usually found at the end of a process, on filling machines and dosing skids. It is complemented by Alfa Laval centrifugal pumps for high-volume transfer, and by rotary lobe, circumferential piston and twin screw pumps where larger volumes, viscous media or gentle handling are required.

Because the gear pump is positive displacement, a relief or bypass is needed on the discharge side to protect the pump and piping if a valve is closed. Fit a filter on the suction if the fluid can carry particles.

Selection and ordering checklist for M Gear

  • Required flow in l/h and the number of fillings or dosing cycles per hour.
  • Differential pressure, including the pressure drop of filler nozzles and pipe.
  • Fluid viscosity, density and temperature (up to 60°C for the range).
  • Pump head size among the three models and the speed needed.
  • Mechanical seal and O-ring material for the fluid and cleaning chemicals.
  • Motor or drive: fixed speed or variable speed, voltage and frequency.
  • Mounting: freestanding bracket or integration on OEM machine.
  • Connection type and hygienic requirements.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of M Gear

Mount the pump so that the inlet is flooded or at least has a short suction run, and avoid running it dry. Check rotation direction against the inlet port, because the pump is bi-rotational and can be connected either way. Fit a pressure relief on the discharge and flush the line before starting.

Service is simple because the mechanical seal, cover plates, backplates and O-rings are interchangeable and the pump can be dismantled in place. Keep a spare seal and O-ring kit, inspect gear tips and bushes for wear at regular intervals and check noise or loss of flow as early signs of wear.

M Gear applications in Oman and the GCC

M Gear pumps are suited to filling and dosing of beverages, sauces, dairy liquids, cosmetics, cleaning products and chemical samples. In the GCC the filling lines of food, water treatment chemicals and personal care manufacturers are the main users, often in air-conditioned halls with hot wash cycles.

As the temperature limit is 60°C, check that hot CIP or steam flushing does not exceed the pump rating and follow the manual for cleaning procedures.

Practical notes on M Gear dosing accuracy

Dosing accuracy depends on keeping the pump full, the speed stable and the discharge pressure steady. If a filler runs many different products, plan the cleaning routine between changeovers, and note that gear clearances are tight, so hard particles in the product can score the gears and bushes. A strainer at the inlet is a cheap form of insurance.

M Gear compared with other hygienic pumps

Pump Characteristic
M Gear Low volume gear pump, up to 1500 l/h and 7 bar
SolidC Centrifugal, up to 80 m³/h and 8 bar
LKH Multistage Centrifugal, higher outlet pressure
DuraCirc, OptiLobe, Twin Screw Larger or gentler positive displacement pumps

About brand

Alfa Laval is a Swedish engineering group built on three technologies: heat transfer, separation and fluid handling. Gustaf de Laval and Oscar Lamm founded the company in Stockholm in 1883 as AB Separator to make de Laval's continuous milk separator; the name Alfa-Laval was adopted in 1963. The company built its first heat exchanger in 1938, and today its plate heat exchangers, separators, pumps and valves are used in energy, marine, food, water and process industries. Group headquarters are in Lund, Sweden.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Alfa Laval gasketed, fusion-bonded and welded plate heat exchangers and hygienic pumps for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Units and spare plates or gaskets are matched from the serial number on the frame nameplate.

Headquarters Lund, Sweden
Ownership Alfa Laval AB, a public company listed on Nasdaq Stockholm
Milestones Continuous separator (1880s), disc-stack separator using von Bechtolsheim's conical disc patent (1890), first heat exchanger (1938)

Alfa Laval heat exchangers and pumps

Model Type Typical use
M6, M10, M15, T20 Gasketed plate heat exchangers HVAC and district cooling, cooling water, lube oil and process heating or cooling; plates can be added or cleaned
AlfaNova 27 Fusion-bonded plate heat exchanger, all stainless steel Compact duty where copper brazing is not acceptable, such as ammonia and some process fluids
Compabloc+ Fully welded plate heat exchanger Higher pressures and temperatures and aggressive media in refineries and chemical plants, without gaskets on the plate pack
LKH Hygienic centrifugal pump Food, beverage, dairy and pharmaceutical processing, with cleaning in place

Where Alfa Laval equipment is used

In Oman and the GCC, Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers are common in district cooling plants, HVAC systems, power stations, desalination, oil and gas processing, refineries and marine engine rooms. Gasketed units suit duties that need regular cleaning or later capacity changes, while welded and fusion-bonded units handle higher pressures, temperatures and media that gaskets cannot. Hygienic LKH pumps serve dairy, juice and beverage plants.

Ordering Alfa Laval equipment: what we need

For spare plates and gaskets, send the serial number and model from the frame nameplate. Alfa Laval keeps the build record, which defines the plate material, pattern and gasket type for each position. For a new heat exchanger add both fluids, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures, allowed pressure drop, design pressure and temperature, and connection standard. For an LKH pump send the model, size, impeller diameter, motor data and duty point.
