Duty classes, protection and cooling

Two duty classes apply: light overload at 865 A and 500 kW, heavy duty at 725 A and 400 kW. Maximum output current is 1100 A. Overload capability: 110% in light-overload use, 140% in heavy duty, each for 1 minute per 10 minutes at 40 degrees C. On a 460 to 480 V network ABB gives 807 A (700 Hp) light-overload and 625 A (500 Hp) heavy duty. Variable-torque loads such as pumps and fans normally use the light-overload column.

The module dissipates 10500 W (36126 BTU/h) and needs 1420 m3/h of cooling air with a maximum noise level of 72 dBA. Fuse sizes and types for the R10 and R11 modules are given in the ACS580 hardware manual 3AXD50000015497, not in the catalogue, so check them there. Rated at +40 degrees C in an enclosure of IP00 or IP20.

The IP00 chassis measures 1662 x 350 x 529 mm and has a mass of 200 kg. Two construction options exist: +B051 for IP20 shrouds and +H370 for full-size input terminals.

Ordering code and options

Read ACS580-04-880A-4 as series ACS580, construction 4 (drive module), size 880A-4 where the digits are the nominal current, and voltage code 4 for 380 to 480 V. ABB’s option list includes +K462 for FCNA-01 ControlNet, +K469 for FECA-01 EtherCAT, +K475 for FENA-21 EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and PROFINET IO. The EMC category C2 is fulfilled by wall-mounted drives and cabinet-built drives up to frame R9; modules and R10 to R11 cabinets meet C3. The brake chopper is not built into the module; external braking equipment is used where needed.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
