Current ratings of the ACS380-040S-045A-4
Duty class decides the column: 40 A (22 kW) for light-overload loads, 34 A (18.5 kW) for heavy-duty loads, and a peak of 61.2 A. The overload definitions are 110% for 60 seconds every ten minutes (light) and 150% for 60 seconds every ten minutes (heavy). The catalogue gives UL horsepower ratings at 208/230 V and 480 V in its ratings tables. Always size from the nameplate current at your supply voltage.
For the supply side ABB lists IEC fuses of 100 A (gG) or 160 A (gR), and UL class T fuses of 100 A. A UL installation can use MS165-73 at 49.8 A input; its minimum enclosure volume is 4577 cubic inches. Plan the cabinet for 663 W (2263 BTU/h) dissipation, where air flow 216 m3/h (127 ft3/min), maximum sound level 69 dBA.
Dynamic braking uses the integrated chopper. Choose a resistor between 6 and 20 ohm; the rating is 25 Hp continuous and 37 kW maximum. Cranes, hoists and high-inertia fans can stop quickly without extra hardware.
How the ACS380-040S-045A-4 is configured
The designation splits into ACS380, 04 for module, 0 for the EMC filter level, S for connectivity, 045A for size and 4 for voltage class. Three connectivity letters exist: S (BMIO-01 I/O and Modbus), N (base, no module) and C (configured). Only the configured variant accepts plus codes, for example +K491 for FMBT-21 Modbus/TCP, +L511 for the BREL-01 relay module, +L534 for BAPO-01 external 24 V DC.
Operation is specified from -10 to +50 degrees C, with derating up to 60 degrees C on R1 to R4, and humidity of 5 to 95% non-condensing. Altitude is 0 to 4000 m for 400 V units and 0 to 2000 m for 200 V units, with derating above 1000 m. Motor cables up to 150 m are allowed without external chokes.

Motor control performance from ABB’s catalog
The ACS380 catalog gives the following control data, which applies to the ACS380-040S-045A-4 (frame R4):
- Motor types: induction and permanent magnet motors, with scalar or vector control, with or without encoder feedback.
- Output frequency: 0 to 599 Hz; switching frequency 1 to 12 kHz, default 4 kHz. Motor noise can be reduced with the energy optimizer or a higher switching frequency.
- Open loop speed control: static accuracy 20% of motor rated slip; dynamic accuracy 1%s with a 100% torque step.
- Closed loop speed control: static accuracy 0.1% of motor rated speed; dynamic accuracy below 1%s with a 100% torque step.
- Torque control: torque step rise time below 10 ms for a rated torque step; non-linearity ±5% at rated torque.
- Braking: flux braking (moderate or full), and a built-in brake chopper as standard for an optional external brake resistor.
Machine functions built into the software include support for limit switches, integrated mechanical brake control, fast stop functions, a parabolic speed reference and a load profile log that shows how the drive has been used. Safe Torque Off is built in according to EN/IEC 61800-5-2.
Reading the type code and installation space
In ABB’s ordering code, 04 means an IP20 module; the next digit is the EMC filter (0 = C3 for 400 V, 2 = high filtering level for the first environment, EN 61800-3 Class C2); S is the standard variant with I/O and Modbus, while C is the configured variant to which fieldbus option codes such as +K475 (Profinet) can be added; 045A is the 45 A nominal output current; and 4 is the three-phase 380 to 480 V supply. Frame R4 drives need 75 mm of free space above and below and can be mounted side by side with no clearance, leaving 20 mm on the right if side-mounted options are used. Commissioning and tuning use ABB’s Drive composer PC tool, and UL Type 1 kits are available for wall mounting outside an enclosure.
Source document and RFQ
Ratings, fuses, dissipation and braking values were read from ABB’s ACS380 catalogue (US edition, Rev E) together with the ABB product page. Seven Star LLC quotes the ACS380-040S-045A-4 from Muscat after you send the motor nameplate, voltage and fieldbus needs.
Please confirm the type code, options, motor rating, resistor and ambient conditions before you order. The catalogue is a US edition, so cross-check IEC values against ABB hardware manual 3AXD50000029274. More drive sizes sit in AC drives, and the ABB ACS580 page introduces the wall-mounted range.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
