Description
Where the ACS480-04-039A-4 is used
ACS480-04-039A-4 is an ABB ACS480 general purpose drive in module construction for three-phase 380 to 480 V supplies. The hardware manual lists 18.5 kW at 38 A nominal output on frame R4, a body 262 mm wide, 240 mm high and 213 mm deep that weighs 5.6 kg in IP20 form. At 18.5 kW it sits in the middle of frame R4 and is common on larger fans and pumps.
ABB delivers the module with an internal EMC filter for category C2, Safe Torque Off, coated circuit boards and support for induction, permanent magnet and ABB SynRM motors. See more sizes in AC drives, or compare with the larger family on the ABB ACS580 page.

Sizing the ACS480-04-039A-4 for the motor
Three duty classes are listed. Nominal: 38 A, 18.5 kW. Light duty: 36 A, 18.5 kW. Heavy duty: 32 A, 15 kW. Peak current is 57.6 A. On the supply side the drive draws 49 A without an input choke or 38 A with one, which matters for cable and fuse selection.
Fuse choices are 80 A gG type OFAF000H80 (minimum short-circuit current 640 A) and 125 A gR type 170M2701; ABB also lists S 803S-B 80 as a circuit breaker. Typical power loss is 497 W, air flow 150 m3/h and noise 69 dB(A).
Hot or high-altitude sites need derating: 0.65 at 8 kHz, 0.49 at 12 kHz, 2% per degree from +50 to +60 degrees C and 1% per 100 m above 1000 m. At the default 4 kHz no switching derating is required.
The manual’s dimension table lists 262 mm width, 240 mm height and 213 mm depth for frame R4, at 5.6 kg. A UL Type 1 kit raises height to 391 mm and weight to 6.9 kg. The motor cable may be up to 100 m for performance; EMC compliance limits are 30 m for category C3 and 10 m for C2 with the internal filter, or 30 m for C1, C2 and C3 with the optional external filter.
Type code and option codes
ACS480-04-039A-4 is composed of ACS480 (series), 04 (module), 039A (size) and 4 (input voltage). Typical additions are K451 for FDNA-01 DeviceNet, K454 for FPBA-01 PROFIBUS DP, K457 for FCAN-01 CANopen and K458 for FSCA-01 RS-485; ABB also offers printed manuals in several languages through R700-series codes.
Further specifications in ABB’s manual include a fundamental power factor of 0.98 at nominal load, induction, permanent magnet and SynRM motor control, a short-circuit proof motor output and natural convection on R0 and a cooling fan on R1 to R4.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
