Sizing the ACS580-04-725A-4 for the motor

From the ratings table: nominal 725 A / 400 kW, light overload 715 A / 400 kW, heavy duty 566 A / 315 kW, Imax 1020 A. Overload capability: 110% in light-overload use, 150% in heavy duty, each for 1 minute per 10 minutes at 40 degrees C. At 440 to 480 V the ratings become 705 A / 600 Hp and 566 A / 450 Hp. Pumps and fans fit the light-overload figures, conveyors and mixers the heavy-duty ones.

Thermal data: 8700 W, 1200 m3/h, 72 dBA. Fuse sizes and types for the R10 and R11 modules are given in the ACS580 hardware manual 3AXD50000015497, not in the catalogue, so check them there. Ratings apply to the IP00 or IP20 enclosed module up to +40 degrees C.

Allow a cabinet space of 350 mm width, 1662 mm height and 529 mm depth for the module (200 kg). Two construction options exist: +B051 for IP20 shrouds and +H370 for full-size input terminals.

Filters, fieldbus and options

In the code ACS580-04-725A-4 the 4 marks the drive module, the current figure is 725 A and the final 4 is the 380 to 480 V class. ABB’s option list includes +K458 for FSCA-01 Modbus RTU, +K462 for FCNA-01 ControlNet, +K469 for FECA-01 EtherCAT. EMC: C2 for wall-mounted drives and cabinets up to frame R9, C3 for modules and the R10 to R11 cabinets. Braking on frame R11 requires an external brake chopper and resistor.

Documents and quotation

The ratings, dimensions, fuses and heat loss were read from ABB’s ACS580 catalogue 3AUA0000145061 (revision G, linked) and ABB’s page for the ACS580-04-725A-4. To request the ACS580-04-725A-4, send Seven Star LLC the motor data and supply details; availability is given in the quotation. Please confirm type code, options, motor data and ambient conditions before ordering; the catalogue revision may be newer than the linked one. For the ACS580-04-725A-4, tell us the application, the cable lengths, the ambient temperature and the installation altitude so derating can be checked before the offer is issued. More sizes sit in AC drives, and the ABB ACS580 page introduces the family.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
