ABB ACS480-04-07A3-4 General Purpose Drive 3 kW 7.2 A

Description

3 kW module drive on frame R1

Machine builders and panel shops who need 3 kW on a 400 V supply will meet the ACS480-04-07A3-4 in the ACS480 hardware manual. The drive provides 7.2 A nominal output on frame R1, with a built-in brake chopper, EMC category C2 filter and Safe Torque Off in the basic unit. At 3 kW it covers pumps and fans of about 7 A motor current on frame R1.

Hardware included in the standard unit: coated circuit boards, support for induction, permanent magnet and ABB SynRM motors, a cold configuration adapter connection for CCA-01 and a front option slot and a side option slot. Other ratings are in AC drives and the general purpose range is introduced on the ABB ACS580 overview.

Choosing between nominal, light and heavy duty

Three duty classes are listed. Nominal: 7.2 A, 3 kW. Light duty: 6.8 A, 3 kW. Heavy duty: 5.6 A, 2.2 kW. Peak current is 10.1 A. On the supply side the drive draws 10.1 A without an input choke or 7.2 A with one, which matters for cable and fuse selection.

The hardware manual recommends 16 A gG fuses (OFAF000H16) or 40 A gR fuses (170M2696), or the S 203P-B 16 breaker. Expect 100 W of losses at 90% of motor nominal frequency and full current, 57 m3/h of cooling air and 63 dB(A).

Switching frequency derating factors are 0.65 at 8 kHz and 0.48 at 12 kHz, with none at 4 kHz. Between +50 and +60 degrees C the current decreases by 1% for each extra degree, and above 1000 m altitude by 1% per 100 m.

Mount the module with 75 mm of free space above and below. Frame R1 measures 73 x 223 x 208 mm and weighs 1.7 kg (UL Type 1 kit: 293 mm high, 2.1 kg). Motor cables up to 100 m are allowed for operation; EMC limits are stricter: 30 m for category C3 and 10 m for C2 with the internal filter, or 40 m for C1, C2 and C3 with the optional external filter.

Type code and option codes

ACS480-04-07A3-4 is composed of ACS480 (series), 04 (module), 07A3 (size) and 4 (input voltage). Typical additions are K475 for FENA-21 Ethernet, K491 for FMBT-21 Modbus/TCP, K492 for FPNO-21 PROFINET IO and L511 for the BREL-01 relay module; ABB also offers printed manuals in several languages through R700-series codes.

Further specifications in ABB’s manual include an output frequency of 0 to 500 Hz, switching frequencies of 2, 4, 8 or 12 kHz, a fundamental power factor of 0.98 at nominal load and induction, permanent magnet and SynRM motor control.

Documentation and quotation

All figures come from ABB’s ACS480 general purpose drives hardware manual (3AXD50000047392, revision F), linked on this page. Seven Star LLC supplies the ACS480-04-07A3-4 on request from Muscat; send the motor nameplate, supply voltage and fieldbus needs with your RFQ and the quotation states availability and lead time.

Confirm before ordering: the exact type code and options, motor current at your voltage, the cabinet cooling and the derating for site temperature and altitude.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
