ABB ACS480-04-05A7-4 General Purpose Drive 2.2 kW 5.6 A

Description

ACS480-04-05A7-4: 5.6 A in a compact IP20 module

Rated 2.2 kW with 5.6 A of nominal current, the ACS480-04-05A7-4 is the ACS480-04 type for loads such as conveyors, mixers, pumps and fans that need dependable speed control without a large drive. It uses frame R1. The 2.2 kW rating suits small mixers and conveyors and sits mid-range on frame R1. The module is optimised for cabinet installation and ships with the assistant control panel and an I/O module.

ABB delivers the module with a built-in brake chopper, an internal EMC filter for category C2, Safe Torque Off and coated circuit boards. See more sizes in AC drives, or compare with the larger family on the ABB ACS580 page.

Sizing the ACS480-04-05A7-4 for the motor

The IEC ratings table gives nominal use 5.6 A / 2.2 kW, light duty 5.3 A / 2.2 kW and heavy duty 4 A / 1.5 kW, with a maximum current of 7.2 A. The input current is 8.5 A without a choke and 5.6 A with a choke. Take the motor nameplate current as the starting point, not the kilowatt figure alone.

Protection data from the manual: gG fuses of 10 A (OFAF000H10) with a minimum short-circuit current of 80 A, or gR fuses of 32 A (170M2695). A miniature circuit breaker alternative is S 203P-B 10. The drive dissipates about 91 W and needs 57 m3/h of cooling air at 63 dB(A).

Derating matters in warm or high-frequency applications: the factor for this type is 0.65 at 8 kHz and 0.48 at 12 kHz. At +50 to +60 degrees C the output current falls by 1% per additional degree, and above 1000 m by 1% per 100 m. ABB permits 4 kHz without derating.

The manual’s dimension table lists 73 mm width, 223 mm height and 208 mm depth for frame R1, at 1.7 kg. A UL Type 1 kit raises height to 293 mm and weight to 2.1 kg. The motor cable may be up to 100 m for performance; EMC compliance limits are 30 m for category C3 and 10 m for C2 with the internal filter, or 40 m for C1, C2 and C3 with the optional external filter.

Options that change the order

An order starts with ACS480-04-05A7-4: 04 means module, 05A7 is the rating and 4 the voltage class. Optional features are selected by plus codes such as K457 for FCAN-01 CANopen, K458 for FSCA-01 RS-485, K469 for FECA-01 EtherCAT and K470 for FEPL-02 POWERLINK. The base unit without panel and I/O module is ordered with +0J400+0L540.

Other manual data: natural convection on R0 and a cooling fan on R1 to R4, a choice of an IEC type or a UL (NEC) type for North America, an input frequency of 47 to 63 Hz and an output frequency of 0 to 500 Hz.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
