ABB ACS880-01-240A-5 ACS880-01 110 kW Frame R8 AC Drive
Description
110 kW ABB ACS880-01-240A-5 drive for process and machine control
A 240 A rating, a frame R8 housing and a 380 to 500 V input define the ABB ACS880-01-240A-5. ABB positions the ACS880 single drive for demanding industrial duty and offers direct torque control in its primary control program.
Standard equipment named in ABB’s type key is the IP21 wall-mounted housing, the assistant panel, a DC choke, the ACS880 primary control program, Safe torque off and a cable entry box.

Fitting frame R8: space, air and fuses
ABB publishes three duty points for this type. Nominal use is 240 A. Light-duty use allows 228 A for 110 kW, and heavy-duty use allows 180 A for 90 kW; the heavy-duty figure is the one to compare with a machine needing high overload. Maximum output current is 350 A.
The -5 voltage code also covers 480 V and 500 V networks: 240 A and 132 kW nominal at 500 V, or 200 hp light duty and 150 hp heavy duty by the UL table at 480 V.
In IP21 form the drive stands 965 mm high, 300 mm wide and 386 mm deep, with a 68.0 kg mass. Free space of 200 mm above and 300 mm below is required, and the fan moves 550 m3/h.
Short-circuit protection in the manual uses a 355 A OFAF1H355 gG fuse, or a 550 A Bussmann 170M5811 aR fuse where ultrarapid protection is preferred; UL installations list JJS-350. The copper power cable size given is 2×(3×70) mm2. Brake chopper operation needs the +D150 plus code on this frame.
Motor cable length should stay under 300 m. ABB warns that long cables also lower the motor voltage, which limits available motor power.
Reading the ACS880-01-240A-5 order code
A plain ACS880-01-240A-5 has no plus codes, which means IP21, no EMC filter and the standard control panel. Add +B056 for IP55, +E200 for a TN-system C3 filter or +0J400 to omit the panel; availability is confirmed at quotation.
Installing the 110 kW R8 drive in an Omani plant room
Mount the ACS880-01-240A-5 on a flat, rigid wall or panel that can carry its 68.0 kg weight, keeping the 200 mm clearance above and 300 mm below so that the 550 m3/h cooling air can enter and leave freely. Do not place it directly above another heat source, and avoid locations where the exhaust of a neighbouring drive is drawn back into the intake.
In the IP21 version the drive is intended for a clean electrical room. Where the room is not air-conditioned, or fine sand can enter through doors and louvres, discuss the IP55 +B056 option or a ventilated enclosure with filtered air before ordering. Route the motor cable away from control and signal wiring, use the cable entry box for an orderly gland arrangement, and complete the earthing exactly as the hardware manual describes.
Commissioning steps before the first motor run
Before power is applied, check the supply voltage against the 380 to 500 V range, confirm the fuse type and rating chosen from the manual, and torque all power terminals. Measure the motor and cable insulation with the drive disconnected, never through it.
With the assistant panel, enter the motor nameplate data and run the motor identification routine offered by the primary control program. Set acceleration, deceleration, current limits and the stop mode to suit the driven load, then verify the Safe torque off circuit by testing that the motor cannot produce torque when the safety input is opened. Record the final parameter set and keep a backup copy with the site documentation so a replacement unit can be configured quickly.
Heat, dust and humidity: operating the ACS880 in the GCC
ABB lists an operating range of -15 to +55 C with derating, so summer conditions in Oman should be checked against the derating curve in the hardware manual rather than assumed. A drive sized close to its limit in spring may run hotter when the electrical room reaches peak afternoon temperature in July and August.
Coated boards help against humid and slightly corrosive air, but they do not replace good room design. Keep the room sealed against wind-blown dust, avoid condensation during cool nights near the coast, and make sure air conditioning or ventilation is sized for the 2912 W of losses this drive releases at full load.
Routine maintenance for long service life
Plan inspections around site conditions instead of a fixed calendar alone. In dusty areas, check the heatsink and fan path more often, cleaning with dry compressed air or a vacuum while the drive is isolated and the DC link has discharged. Re-check power terminal tightness during planned shutdowns, look for discoloured insulation, and review the fault and event log for repeated overtemperature or overcurrent trips. ABB publishes recommended preventive maintenance intervals in the ACS880 documentation; follow those intervals and keep spare parts planning in line with the importance of the driven process.
Documents and quotation
Source documents are ABB’s ACS880 single drives catalogue and ACS880-01 hardware manual, plus the manufacturer product page for ACS880-01-240A-5. More drives are in AC Drives, and the ACS880-01 page covers the family.
Please match the exact type code and options to the installed equipment first. Seven Star LLC supplies as an independent business in Muscat and gives availability with each quotation.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
