Description
ACS880-01-096A-5: 45 kW industrial drive in frame R6
The ABB ACS880-01-096A-5 is a wall-mounted ACS880-01 single drive for 380 to 500 V three-phase supplies. ABB’s rating table gives it 96 A of nominal output current, matched to a 45 kW motor at 400 V, and places it in frame R6.
The hardware manual lists induction motors, permanent magnet motors, servomotors and ABB SynRM motors as supported motor types. Safe torque off is included in the basic drive.

Mounting space and cooling for frame R6
Start from the motor nameplate current rather than the kilowatt figure alone. At 400 V this drive supplies 96 A nominal (45 kW), 91 A light duty or 77 A heavy duty, with 148 A as the maximum output current.
ABB gives a second rating at 500 V (96 A, 55 kW nominal). North American 480 V ratings are 75 hp for light duty and 60 hp for heavy duty.
Frame R6 weighs 42.2 kg in IP21 form and measures 252 mm wide, 727 mm high and 357 mm deep including the cable entry box. Cooling air demand is 435 m3/h; typical losses reach 1157 W, which the cabinet or room must carry away.
Choose between a 125 A OFAF00H125 gG fuse and a 250 A 170M3816 aR fuse; JJS-150 applies to UL class T installations. Copper power conductors of 3×50 mm2 are specified. This frame has no brake chopper as standard; ABB lists the +D150 brake chopper as a factory option.
Use shielded motor cable up to 300 m. The air temperature range in operation is -15 to +55 C, with derating, and altitude up to 4000 m with derating above 1000 m.
Reading the ACS880-01-096A-5 order code
In ACS880-01-096A-5, ACS880 is the series, 01 the wall-mounted single drive, 096A the size and -5 the voltage range. Plus codes follow: +B056 gives IP55, +E200 and +E202 select EMC filters, +D150 adds a brake chopper and +C131 adds vibration dampers. Quote every plus code you need.
Selection checks before ordering the 096A-5
Compare the motor nameplate current with the light-duty and heavy-duty ratings in the table and decide which duty the application really has. Centrifugal pumps and fans normally run with little overload, while conveyors, mixers, crushers and hoists can need high starting torque and repeated overloads, which points to the heavy-duty figure. Check the supply voltage and network type, since the EMC filter choice depends on whether the network is earthed or IT (ungrounded), and agree with the site electrical engineer which of the EMC plus codes is suitable. If the load can regenerate energy, for example a decelerating high-inertia fan or a lowering hoist, decide early whether the +D150 brake chopper and a resistor are needed, as this frame does not include one as standard.
Installation in a cabinet or plant room
Mount the drive vertically on a solid, non-combustible wall or panel and keep the free space above and below that the hardware manual specifies for frame R6, so cooling air can flow freely. Use symmetrical shielded motor cable, terminate the shield with full 360-degree contact at the drive and motor, and keep control cables apart from power cables. Size fuses and cables according to the values above and the local wiring regulations, and check that the earthing of the motor, drive and cabinet is continuous. Where the drive is installed in an enclosure, design ventilation or cooling for the stated losses at the highest expected ambient temperature.
Commissioning and routine maintenance
Before power-up, check insulation of the motor and cable as described in the manual, verify supply voltage and phase rotation, and confirm that the safe torque off circuit is wired as designed. Enter motor nameplate data through the ACS-AP-W panel, run the identification routine with the motor uncoupled where the process allows, and then set limits, ramps and control sources. Test start, stop, emergency stop and safe torque off in both local and remote control. Afterwards, save a parameter backup. Routine maintenance focuses on clean cooling paths, tight power connections and following the maintenance intervals ABB publishes in the hardware manual.
Heat, dust and humidity in Omani installations
A 45 kW drive releases a noticeable amount of heat, and in Omani substations and pump houses the room temperature in summer can push the drive into its derating range. Calculate the cooling needed for the hottest day, not the average, and consider air-conditioned MCC rooms for critical drives. Desert dust clogs heatsinks and filters faster than in temperate climates, so set cleaning intervals according to site conditions and inspect them more often during sandstorm seasons. In coastal locations with salty humid air, the coated boards help, but keeping the room sealed and dry remains the most reliable protection. Where the drive must sit outdoors or in a dusty area without a cabinet, review whether the IP55 option +B056 is the better fit.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
ABB product families on this page
Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.
Where ABB instruments and drives are used
Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.
Ordering ABB parts: what we need
For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
