Current ratings, fuses and heat loss

Two duty classes apply: light overload at 161 A and 90 kW, heavy duty at 145 A and 75 kW. Maximum output current is 247 A. The overload definitions are 110% (light) and 150% (heavy duty) for one minute every ten minutes at 40 degrees C. At 440 to 480 V the ratings become 156 A / 125 Hp and 124 A / 100 Hp. Pumps and fans fit the light-overload figures, conveyors and mixers the heavy-duty ones.

Fuses: 250 A gG on the IEC side, 225 A class T for UL. The drive dissipates 1976 W (6748 BTU/h) and needs 450 m3/h of cooling air at up to 67 dBA. Frames R4 to R9 are rated to +40 degrees C in IP21 and can run to +50 degrees C with derating.

Frame R7 in IP21: height 880 mm including the glandbox, 284 mm width, 370 mm depth, 54 kg. IP55 for dusty or wet rooms is ordered with +B056: 880 x 284 x 381 mm, 56 kg.

Filters, fieldbus and options

Read ACS580-01-169A-4 as series ACS580, construction 1 (wall-mounted drive), size 169A-4 where the digits are the nominal current, and voltage code 4 for 380 to 480 V. ABB’s option list includes +K458 for FSCA-01 Modbus RTU, +K462 for FCNA-01 ControlNet, +K469 for FECA-01 EtherCAT. Category C2 applies to wall-mounted drives and cabinets to R9, while modules and R10 or R11 cabinet drives meet C3 without external filters. A brake chopper is standard only up to R3; for frame R7 braking needs an external chopper and resistor.

Source document and RFQ

The ratings, dimensions, fuses and heat loss were read from ABB’s ACS580 catalogue 3AUA0000145061 (revision G, linked) and ABB’s page for the ACS580-01-169A-4. Seven Star LLC quotes the ACS580-01-169A-4 from Muscat after receiving the motor nameplate, supply voltage and option list. Before ordering, check the exact code and options, the motor rating, braking needs and site derating in the ACS580 hardware manuals. Send the motor nameplate, supply data, control interface and fieldbus requirement for the ACS580-01-169A-4 so that the offer lists exactly the plus codes that are needed. More sizes sit in AC drives, and the ABB ACS580 page introduces the family.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
