Description
Where the ACS480-04-12A7-4 is used
ACS480-04-12A7-4 is an ABB ACS480 general purpose drive in module construction for three-phase 380 to 480 V supplies. The hardware manual lists 5.5 kW at 12.6 A nominal output on frame R2, a body 97 mm wide, 223 mm high and 208 mm deep that weighs 2.2 kg in IP20 form. At 5.5 kW it is the only 400 V rating on frame R2.
Basic equipment covers an embedded Modbus RTU fieldbus, a built-in brake chopper, an internal EMC filter for category C2 and Safe Torque Off. Related products sit in AC drives; the wall-mounted sister platform is on the ABB ACS580 page.

Choosing between nominal, light and heavy duty
Match 12 A (light duty, 5.5 kW) or 9.4 A (heavy duty, 4 kW) to the motor. The nominal figure is 12.6 A for 5.5 kW and the peak is 16.9 A. Mains current: 16.5 A without a choke, 12.6 A with one.
The hardware manual recommends 25 A gG fuses (OFAF000H25) or 50 A gR fuses (170M2697), or the S 203P-B 25 breaker. Expect 165 W of losses at 90% of motor nominal frequency and full current, 63 m3/h of cooling air and 59 dB(A).
Switching frequency derating factors are 0.68 at 8 kHz and 0.51 at 12 kHz, with none at 4 kHz. Between +50 and +60 degrees C the current decreases by 1% for each extra degree, and above 1000 m altitude by 1% per 100 m.
Physical data: frame R2, 97 x 223 x 208 mm, 2.2 kg, free space 75 mm above and below. UL Type 1 kit adds hood and connection box (293 mm, 2.7 kg). Cable guidance: 100 m maximum for operation, and for EMC 20 m for category C3 and 10 m for C2 with the internal filter, or 40 m for C1, C2 and C3 with the optional external filter.
Decoding the ordering code
The designation splits into series ACS480, construction 04 (module), rating 12A7 and voltage code 4. The plain code gives the standard unit; plus codes ABB lists include J424 for a blank panel cover, K451 for FDNA-01 DeviceNet, K454 for FPBA-01 PROFIBUS DP and K457 for FCAN-01 CANopen.
Other manual data: a choice of an IEC type or a UL (NEC) type for North America, an input frequency of 47 to 63 Hz, an output frequency of 0 to 500 Hz and switching frequencies of 2, 4, 8 or 12 kHz.
Datasheet and ordering notes

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
