ABB ACS550-01-023A-4 AC Drive 11 kW 23 A

Description

A 11 kW ACS550-01 for 400 V motors

ACS550-01-023A-4 is a wall-mounted ABB ACS550 general purpose drive for 380 to 480 V supplies. In normal use the catalogue gives 11 kW (15 hp) at 23 A, and in heavy-duty use 7.5 kW at 15.4 A. It is built on frame R2, 125 mm wide and 222 mm deep. At 11 kW it closes frame R2 and is also the largest ACS550-01 rating with the built-in brake chopper, useful for loads that need to decelerate quickly.

Approvals printed in the catalogue are UL, cUL, CE, C-Tick and GOST R, and the drives comply with RoHS. Wall-mounted units are code 01 in the type designation; floor-standing units are code 02. Compare ratings in AC drives or read the ABB ACS550 range description.

Sizing the ACS550-01-023A-4 for your motor

Continuous output current is 23 A in normal use and 15.4 A in heavy duty, where 150% for a minute gives about 23.1 A. Switching frequency defaults to 4 kHz and is selectable between 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 kHz. The drive can run in ambient temperatures from -15 to 50 degrees C, with derating from 40 degrees C.

Fuse: 25 A gG or 30 A Class T. Cooling: 88 m3/h (52 ft3/min) of air, losses of 337 W (1151 BTU/hr), with free space of 200 mm above and below. Motor cable: 200 m as standard, 250 m with output choke NOCH-0030-6X, whose thermal current is 41 A.

Type designation and variants

Each section of ACS550-01-023A-4 has a meaning. ACS550 is the series, 01 the wall-mounted construction, 023A the rating and 4 the voltage range. Add a plus code for options: +B055 gives IP54, +J404 the basic panel, +0J400 omits the panel, +L511 adds relay outputs, +K454 adds PROFIBUS DP through RPBA-01.

Weight and size: 9 kg and 469 x 125 x 222 mm in IP21; 11 kg and 561 x 213 x 245 mm in IP54. The IP54 option suits dusty or damp rooms. Fieldbus choices in the catalogue include DeviceNet, PROFIBUS DP (RPBA-01), CANopen, ControlNet, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET IO, POWERLINK and EtherCAT adapters.

Normal use or heavy duty: reading the load first

The choice between the 11 kW normal-use rating and the 7.5 kW heavy-duty rating comes from the load curve, not only from the motor nameplate. Centrifugal fans and pumps need little torque at low speed and rarely demand a long overload, so an 11 kW motor on such a load usually fits the normal-use rating. Conveyors, mixers, crushers, positive displacement pumps and hoisting duties start against full torque and may need the higher overload for a minute at a time; on these, the 15.4 A heavy-duty current is the figure to compare with the motor full-load current. When the motor current lies between the two ratings and the load is a constant-torque machine, the next larger drive is normally the safer selection.

Think about stopping as well as starting. A high-inertia fan or a loaded conveyor that has to stop quickly will push energy back into the drive. The built-in brake chopper makes this practical on this rating, but it still needs an external brake resistor selected from the ABB catalogue for the duty.

Installing and commissioning the drive

  • Mount the drive vertically on a solid wall or panel plate with the free space above and below that the catalogue requires, so cooling air can pass the heat sink.
  • Protect the supply with the recommended fuses and use symmetrical shielded motor cable, earthing the shield at both the drive and the motor ends as described in the ABB manual.
  • Keep motor cable runs within the listed lengths, and add the NOCH-0030-6X output choke where a longer run is needed.
  • Enter the motor nameplate data, run the identification routine with the motor uncoupled where possible, then set acceleration and deceleration times to suit the machine.
  • Check rotation direction and current at a low speed before running the machine at full speed.

Maintenance and fault finding

The most common cause of overtemperature trips on wall-mounted drives is a blocked heat sink or a failing cooling fan. Inspect and clean the heat sink fins and fan at regular intervals, more often in dusty areas. Overcurrent trips during acceleration often mean the ramp time is too short or the load is heavier than expected; overvoltage trips during deceleration point to a ramp that is too fast or a missing or undersized brake resistor. Record the fault code shown on the panel before resetting, as it narrows the search considerably.

Running the ACS550 in Omani and GCC conditions

Ambient heat is the main limit in Oman. The catalogue allows operation up to 50 degrees C with derating from 40 degrees C, and many motor control rooms and outdoor kiosks reach the upper part of that range in summer, so size the drive and the panel ventilation together. Where the drive sits in an enclosure, the enclosure must remove the 337 W of losses; a sealed cabinet without cooling will quickly overheat. In dusty pump stations and workshops, or in humid coastal plants, the IP54 version or a suitably filtered enclosure is the better choice than an open IP21 unit, and dust filters should be cleaned on a fixed schedule.

About brand

ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.

ABB product families on this page

Flow measurement includes ABB electromagnetic, Coriolis, vortex and swirl meters, sold under names such as ProcessMaster, AquaMaster, CoriolisMaster and SwirlMaster. Liquid analysis covers pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors with their transmitters. SensyTemp TSP sensors handle temperature. On the electrical side the listing has ACS355 machinery drives, the ACS550 general purpose drive, the ACQ580 for water and wastewater and the ACS880-01 industrial drive, with fieldbus adapters such as the FPBA-01 for PROFIBUS DP. Protection and switching products include SACE Tmax XT molded case breakers, SACE Emax 2 air circuit breakers, PSR soft starters and the REM615 and RET615 relays.

Where ABB instruments and drives are used

Water and wastewater plants use the electromagnetic flowmeters, analyzers and ACQ580 drives together. Oil and gas, power and chemical plants specify the Coriolis and vortex meters, pressure and level transmitters and the 615 series relays for motor and transformer feeders. The drives run pumps, fans, conveyors and compressors in almost every industry.

Ordering ABB parts: what we need

For drives send the full type code from the rating label, for example ACS355-03E-05A6-4, plus the serial number if it is a replacement. For instruments send the complete order code, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol and the hazardous area approval. For breakers give frame size, rated current, breaking capacity, number of poles, trip unit and fixed or withdrawable version.
