ABB LST200 Ultrasonic Level Transmitter

Description

Overview

The ABB LST200 is an ultrasonic level transmitter for continuous, non-contact level measurement of liquids in tanks, sumps, basins and open channels, with ranges from 0.35 to 8 m (S06: 0.35-6 m, S08: 0.35-8 m). The sensor emits ultrasonic pulses and measures the time for the echo to return, providing level, distance, volume or flow output through a two-wire 4-20 mA loop. An algorithm with temperature compensation, GAP regulator and noise filter ensures accuracy of +/-3 mm or 0.25% of full span, whichever is larger, with 1 mm resolution.

Engineering and Design

The LST200 is loop powered from 15 to 30 V DC (19-30 V DC for the LCD version) with very low power consumption of 60 to 600 mW, and the output is fully compensated for temperature effects on the speed of sound. The optional integrated LCD display shows a percentage bargraph, real-time waveform and diagnostics messages, with simplified two-button programming and an easy setup menu. Enclosure and sensing element are polycarbonate with IP66/67 protection (IP68 up to 2 m for 24 hours), and the transmitter operates from -30 to 60 C.

The sensor handles pressures from -0.25 to 3.0 bar (-4 to 44 psi) and relative humidity up to 100%, with vibration and shock resistance verified to IEC 60068-2-64 and IEC 60068-2-27. The process connection is an M56 x 3.0 thread with an M20 x 1.5 cable entry, and the device supports blanking and echo-processing features for applications involving bulk material, heavy vapor, dust, turbulence or foam (consult ABB for range reduction). The LST200 is also suitable for open-channel flow measurement with a user-selected flow table. Seven Star LLC supplies both the S06 (0.35–6 m) and S08 (0.35–8 m) range variants as an authorized ABB partner across Oman and the GCC, sizing the model, mounting bracket, and cable length to the customer’s actual tank height and installation geometry before shipment.

Operating Principle

The transmitter’s transducer emits a short burst of ultrasonic energy toward the liquid surface and precisely times the round-trip echo return; the built-in GAP (Gain-Adjustment Profile) regulator and adaptive noise filter distinguish the true liquid-surface echo from false reflections caused by agitator turbulence, foam, condensation, or structural obstructions inside the vessel. Because the measurement is entirely non-contact, the LST200 avoids the fouling, coating, and mechanical-wear failure modes that affect float- or displacer-based level instruments, and requires no process penetration below the liquid surface.

  • Temperature compensation, GAP regulator and noise filter for stable readings
  • Optional LCD with backlight, bargraph, real-time waveform and diagnostics messages
  • Simplified two-button programming with setup menu in English and Chinese
  • IP66/67 protection (IP68 up to 2 m for 24 h) in polycarbonate housing
  • Operating temperature -30 to 60 C and humidity up to 100%
  • Level, distance, volume and open-channel flow measurement in one device
  • Sensor pressure range -0.25 to 3.0 bar with anti-condensation sensor option

Applications

Level measurement of water, wastewater, chemicals and other liquids in tanks, sumps, reservoirs and basins, plus open-channel flow measurement in flumes and weirs for water and wastewater networks. Seven Star LLC supplies the LST200 into municipal water and wastewater treatment plants, industrial process tanks, and stormwater and irrigation channels across Muscat, Sohar, Salalah, and the wider GCC, where its two-wire loop power and simple mounting keep installation cost low on both new and retrofit projects. The built-in open-channel flow table option lets a single instrument serve as both a level transmitter and a flow monitor on flume- or weir-based measurement points, avoiding the cost of a separate dedicated flow meter where the application allows it.
