Endress+Hauser FTL85 Coated Liquiphant FailSafe Level Switch

Description

Endress+Hauser FTL85 coated Liquiphant FailSafe level switch

The Endress+Hauser FTL85 combines the coated fork of the FTL62 with the FailSafe electronics used in the FTL80 and FTL81. It is a vibronic MIN or MAX point level switch for safety loops up to SIL 3, designed for liquids that would attack bare stainless steel. The fork and pipe carry an ECTFE, PFA or enamel coating, and the 2-wire 4–20 mA output includes a permanent LIVE signal. Seven Star LLC supplies the FTL85 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Process temperature is –50 to +150 °C (ECTFE up to 120 °C) and pressure goes up to 40 bar, with a sensor length up to 3 m. A second process seal (second line of defense) is available as an option.

How the FTL85 combines coating and failsafe monitoring

The coating is applied over the whole wetted fork and extension, so the process medium never touches the carrier metal. The measurement principle is unchanged: the fork vibrates, liquid covering it lowers the frequency, and the electronics turn the change into a current step. In the FTL85 the electronics also monitor the fork for damage, corrosion, buildup and blocking, which is especially relevant for coated forks because a damaged coating can allow corrosion on the carrier.

Compared with the FTL62, which offers HART and Ethernet-APL communication for diagnostics, the FTL85 trades flexible communication for deterministic loop behavior: 18.5 to 9.0 mA in minimum mode and 13.5 to 6.0 mA in maximum mode, with the live signal on the OK level, and a fault current below 3.6 mA.

Coating properties and choice for the FTL85

Coating Properties from datasheet Typical use
ECTFE (HALAR) Fluoropolymer, good chemical and abrasion resistance, non-stick Chemicals, limited to 120 °C
PFA Similar to PTFE, high temperature stability; Edlon grade is FDA compliant Chemical and pharma, 150 °C; conductive grade for explosive atmospheres
Enamel Glass-like, acid resistant, dirt repellent, low impact resistance Strong acids, 150 °C, 25 bar

Related models: FTL85 against FTL62, FTL80 and FTL81

Choose the FTL85 when you need both coating and a SIL 3 capable live-signal loop. If the application is not safety-related, the FTL62 gives the same coatings with HART or Ethernet-APL. If the liquid is compatible with stainless steel and the process exceeds 150 °C, the FTL80 (compact) or FTL81 (pipe) apply, while the FTL64 serves high temperature without the FailSafe loop. The FTL85 shares its electronic insert with the FTL80 and FTL81, so spare inserts and evaluators can be common across a plant.

FTL85 selection and ordering checklist

  • Medium composition and concentration, to select ECTFE, PFA or enamel.
  • Maximum temperature (ECTFE 120 °C) and pressure (enamel 25 bar, others 40 bar), plus flange derating.
  • Required insertion length up to 3 m and the nozzle geometry.
  • MIN or MAX safety function, density combination, and viscosity within the 100 mPa·s MIN limit.
  • Flange standard and rating; the coated flange carrier material.
  • Optional second line of defense, housing type and cable entry or M12 plug.
  • Ex, WHG and SIL documentation, and the evaluator (Nivotester FailSafe FTL825 or safety PLC).

Installing and maintaining the FTL85

Handle the coated probe carefully and keep it in its protective packaging until it is installed. Avoid any impact against the nozzle, especially with enamel. Maintain at least 10 mm clearance to the wall and align the fork using the flange marking. Follow the support guidance for long probes and observe the lateral load limit of the pipe. Connect with the correct MIN or MAX coding and verify the live signal at the evaluator.

The proof test is started at the device with a button and can be repeated at intervals up to 12 years in line with your safety verification. During shutdowns check the coating visually for scratches, blisters or discoloration, and replace the device if the coating is damaged.

FTL85 applications in Oman and the GCC

Examples include overfill protection of hydrochloric or sulphuric acid storage, sodium hypochlorite and caustic soda tanks, and aggressive process sumps in desalination, water treatment, fertilizer and petrochemical plants. Coastal humidity and high ambient temperatures call for a well-sealed housing and a shaded installation, while the corrosion-resistant fork protects against the media itself.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.

FAQ

Questions about the Endress+Hauser FTL85 Coated Liquiphant FailSafe

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01How does the FTL85 differ from the FTL62?
Both use ECTFE, PFA or enamel coatings. The FTL62 offers HART or Ethernet-APL communication, while the FTL85 uses a 4–20 mA FailSafe loop with a live signal for safety functions up to SIL 3.
02What temperature and pressure limits apply to the FTL85?
ECTFE coating goes from –50 to +120 °C, PFA and enamel to +150 °C. Pressure is up to 40 bar with plastic coating and 25 bar with enamel, and the flange rating can reduce this.
03What is the longest FTL85 probe?
The datasheet gives a maximum sensor length of 3 m (10 ft). The exact length is set when the device is configured.
04Which viscosity can the FTL85 handle?
Maximum detection allows up to 10,000 mPa·s, while minimum detection is limited to 100 mPa·s.
05Is the PFA coating suitable for food or explosive atmospheres?
The datasheet describes PFA Edlon as FDA compliant under 21 CFR 177.1550/2600, and a conductive PFA grade developed for explosive atmospheres. Check the approval for your exact order code.
