Gullco KBM-18 Portable Plate Edge Bevelling Machine
Description
Portable plate edge bevelling machine for weld joint preparation
The Gullco KBM-18 is a portable, electrically driven plate edge bevelling machine, a rotary shear that cuts clean machined bevels on the top edge of plate, ready for welding and without the thermal distortion of flame cutting. Gullco designed it for one-man operation on straight or circular plate sections, and the bevel angle can be changed from 22.5 to 55 degrees by swapping the angle bevel pin.
Bevelling is done in multiple passes where the bevel is larger than the machine can take at once. Gullco states the multi-pass capacity at 18 mm bevel width and 15.6 mm depth at 30 degrees on 45 kg/mm2 material. The KBM-18 can be paired with the KBM-18U underside beveller for plate that needs bevels on both sides.

Bevelling capacity by angle and material strength
The table gives the maximum recommended multiple-pass bevel width / depth from the operating manual. As tensile strength increases, capacity falls.
| Bevel angle | 64,000 lb/in2 (45 kg/mm2) | 71,000 lb/in2 (50 kg/mm2) | 85,000 lb/in2 (60 kg/mm2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22.5 deg | 18.0 mm / 16.7 mm | 17.0 mm / 15.7 mm | 14.0 mm / 12.9 mm |
| 30 deg | 18.0 mm / 15.6 mm | 15.0 mm / 13.0 mm | 13.0 mm / 11.2 mm |
| 37.5 deg | 17.0 mm / 13.5 mm | 14.0 mm / 11.1 mm | 11.9 mm / 9.5 mm |
| 45 deg | 17.0 mm / 12.0 mm | 14.0 mm / 9.9 mm | 11.9 mm / 8.4 mm |
| 55 deg | 15.0 mm / 8.6 mm | 14.0 mm / 8.0 mm | 11.9 mm / 6.8 mm |
Using the machine within its limits
Gullco’s manual advises bevelling conservatively: no more than 70% of the total capacity in a single pass, and no more than 50% on high-tensile steel and stainless steel, with a second pass to reach the finished depth. The machine must be set in accordance with the bevel setting section of the manual before use, and cutter life depends on the material, the bevel depth and how the cutter is sharpened.
The machine can be mounted on an optional height-adjustable, spring-loaded caster undercarriage for self-propelled bevelling along the plate edge, which keeps the bevel and root face uniform, or used on a bench. At 125 to 204 kg depending on the undercarriage, lifting equipment is needed to move it, and the motor supply must match the 3-phase voltage and frequency ordered.
Documents and quotation
The attached Gullco operating instructions and parts list (GD-046, revised September 26, 2019) contain the machine specifications, bevel settings, cutter details and parts breakdowns. Related machines are listed under Pipe Cutting and Bevelling Machines.
For a quotation, state plate material and thickness, bevel angle and size, the motor voltage and frequency, and whether the undercarriage is needed.

About brand
Gullco International was formed in 1954 to serve the welding industry in North America and is a family-owned company with its world headquarters in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. It manufactures welding and cutting automation, plate beveling machines, ceramic weld backing and electrode ovens. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Gullco KAT and MOGGY carriages and KBM plate bevelling machines, including the GK-R-300 KAT 300 welding carriage, and sources Gullco equipment for fabricators.
Gullco product groups
The best-known line is the KAT® family of welding and cutting carriages, which run on rigid, semi-rigid or flexible track and can carry weld oscillators, auto-weld and indexing functions, plasma or flame cutting torches and seam trackers. Gullco also builds MOGGY® trackless carriages, KBM plate beveling machines, gantry systems, KATBAK® ceramic weld backing and electrode stabilising ovens.
Ordering Gullco equipment: what we need
Give the Gullco item number, which includes the model option, and the supply voltage. For carriages, list the track type and length, the mounting devices and the torch or gun holder you need. For KATBAK backing, state the joint type, plate thickness and tile profile.
