Selectarc B82 E8018-C1 2.5% Ni Low-Temperature Electrode

Description

Nickel-alloyed electrode for service down to -60 °C

The Selectarc B82 is a basic low-hydrogen electrode alloyed with about 2.5% nickel for welding cold-tough fine-grain steels, including nickel steels and heat-treated steels, used at temperatures as low as -60 °C. It is classified AWS A5.5 E8018-C1 and ISO 2560-A / EN 499 E 46 6 2Ni B 4 2 H5.

Selectarc lists liquid gas distribution pipes, storage tanks, offshore construction and petrochemical plants as its main applications. The data sheet shows guaranteed impact values down to -73 °C, which covers the typical test temperatures used for 2.5% Ni steels.

Matching steels

The data sheet covers a wide range of European and American low-temperature grades. European examples are 0.5 Ni and 1.5 Ni steels to NF A 36-208, TStE 255 to TStE 420 to DIN 17102, and 14Ni6, 10Ni14, 11MnNi5-3, 12MnNi6-3 and 13MnNi6-3 to DIN 17780. ASTM materials listed include A203 Gr A and B plate, A352 LC2 castings, A334 Gr 7 tube, A707 L4 to L6 flanges, A662 Gr A and B and A714.

2.5% nickel steels sit between the 1% Ni grades used to about -46 °C and the 3.5% Ni steels used to about -101 °C. They are found in ethane and propane handling, refrigerated storage and offshore modules exposed to low design temperatures. Matching the filler to this level of nickel keeps the weld metal toughness in line with the parent plate without unnecessary over-alloying.

Practical recommendations

Redry the electrodes at 350 °C for 1 hour when needed and keep them in a heated quiver once opened. Selectarc suggests preheating above 100 °C for heavy thicknesses; on thinner sections the preheat can be reduced in line with the qualified procedure and the carbon equivalent of the steel.

For the best Charpy results at -60 °C and below, use stringer beads rather than wide weaves, control heat input and interpass temperature, and avoid excessive bead size in the cap. Typical currents run from 80 A for the 2.5 mm size to 190 A for the 5.0 mm size on DC positive. Impact testing of the weld and heat-affected zone at the design temperature is normally part of the procedure qualification for this type of service, so confirm the test temperature before ordering.

About brand

Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.

Selectarc welding and brazing products

The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.

Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need

Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
