The Trafimet EXPERTIG 26 is a gas-cooled TIG torch built on the widely used 26 head size. Trafimet rates it at 180 A DC and 150 A AC at 35% duty cycle, with tungsten electrodes from 0.5 to 4.0 mm. It uses argon shielding gas, conforms to EN 60974-7 and has a single push button with a PC board in the handle for trigger control.

The torch is supplied in 4 m or 8 m lengths with a rigid or flex head, and terminates in a TSK 50 power plug with a 1/4 G gas fitting for machines with that connection.

Trafimet lists the insulator TQ0002, back cap BW0066 (117 mm) with O-ring EA0130, one-button kit TT0611, pc-board TT0630, handle kit TT0602, cable joint BW0311, cable assemblies TH1472-040 and TH1472-080, power cables TH0007 and TH0008 and the TSK 50 to 1/4 G plug CX0077. Wear parts are not included in the torch package. Optional starter kits TT0103, TT0104 and TT0105 cover 1.6, 2.4 and 3.2 mm tungsten.

The 26 head shares consumables with the EXPERTIG 17, 18 and 18 HC. Trafimet recommends gas lens parts where gas coverage is critical, for example on stainless steel, titanium and aluminium.

Using the rating correctly

The 35% duty cycle means the torch is meant for intermittent welding near its rated current; for long runs at 150 A or more, a water-cooled torch is more suitable. AC welding of aluminium heats the head more than DC, which is why the AC rating is lower. Choose the flex head when access is awkward, and confirm the machine accepts a TSK 50 plug before ordering.

Tungsten preparation has a large influence on arc stability. Grind electrodes lengthwise to a point for DC welding of steel and stainless, and use a smaller included angle for low currents. The collet and collet body must match the electrode diameter; a mismatch lets the electrode slip or overheat. A long back cap holds full-length electrodes, while a short cap helps in confined spaces.

Fit a gas lens and larger cup when welding stainless pipe or titanium, set post-flow long enough for the electrode to cool, and check the gas hose and plug for leaks if the electrode tip discolours.

Keep a spare torch head and a set of insulators on hand, because a cracked insulator or worn head thread is the usual cause of gas leaks and arc wander on this torch size.
