A light 180 A MIG torch for thin wire and sheet-metal work

The Trafimet ERGOPLUS 15 is a gas-cooled MIG/MAG torch from the Ergoplus range, rated at 180 A with CO2 and 150 A with mixed gas at 60% duty cycle according to EN 60974-7. It is the lightest torch in the series, built for 0.6 to 1.0 mm wire, and suits light fabrication, body repair, sheet-metal and maintenance work on compact MIG power sources.

Like the rest of the Ergoplus family it has an ergonomic handle with an optional pistol grip (MT0566, supplied as standard equipment in all torch packages) and a EURO connector at the machine end.

Spare parts on the technical sheet

The Trafimet sheet lists the head assembly parts so the torch can be rebuilt rather than replaced: plastic body BW0562, spring EA0303, hexagonal fitting FB0112, diffuser FB0117, trigger kit MT0563, handle kit MT0562 and the pistol grip MT0566. At the machine end are the EURO air connector AR0070, plastic euro nut BW0018, M10x1 liner nut FA0026 and the EURO back box kit MT0565. Order the liner by length to match the cable; a blue steel liner is the usual choice for steel and flux-cored wire.

When fitting a new liner, cut it flush with the head end after the torch is fully assembled and the cable laid straight; a liner that is too short leaves a gap where the wire can kink, and one that is too long pushes against the contact tip and causes erratic feeding.

Choosing the right Ergoplus size

The rating is quoted at 60% duty cycle, so continuous production welding at the top of the range will heat the torch. If the job regularly needs more current or 1.2 mm wire, move up the series; the Trafimet ERGOPLUS 36 MIG torch is the heavier gas-cooled option. For short arc welding of thin sheet with 0.6 or 0.8 mm wire, the ERGOPLUS 15 keeps hand weight and cable stiffness low, which reduces fatigue over a shift. Contact tips wear with use; keeping spare tips of the correct diameter avoids feeding problems and arc instability.
