A 600 A water-cooled machine torch for hard tooling

The Tregaskiss AW2 is a fixed automatic water-cooled MIG gun, also called a machine torch, with a duty cycle rating of 100 % at 600 A with CO2 and mixed gases. The ratings are based on tests that comply with IEC 60974-7. Tregaskiss designed it for dependable performance in high-amperage, high-temperature hard tooling applications: fixed or hard automation, long repeatable seams and fixed orbital welding, in general manufacturing and fabrication and in heavy equipment.

The simple design has internal threaded connections that stay tight inside an anti-vibration compression-fit body, which is meant to give good electrical connectivity, longer life and minimal replacement parts.

Choosing barrel length, cable and consumables

The barrel length decides how far the nozzle reaches into the joint: the 9.25 in barrel is the shorter option and the 12.25 in barrel is the longer, and the sheet notes that guns of 12.25 in length accept a pitch rack. The with-cable version is built around a power cable, conduit assembly and coolant hoses available in lengths from 3 to 25 ft, while the version without cable is supplied with 60 in water hoses for connection to a water circulator. Functional gun length varies with the consumables you choose; the sheet allows plus or minus 0.25 in on length with non-standard front-end consumables and plus or minus 2 in on assembled cable length.

Consumables and maintenance

Three consumable series can be specified. AccuLock R consumables are designed to eliminate contact tip cross-threading and increase tip life and replacement accuracy, and AccuLock HDP contact tips are said to extend life by an additional 10 times or more in pulse welding. Centerfire and Quik Tip are the other listed series. Liners come as rear load types matched to wire diameter, and Tough Gard anti-spatter liquid is offered to reduce spatter adhesion and nozzle cleaning downtime.

How the Tregaskiss AW2 works

The AW2 is a machine torch for MIG welding. Wire feeds through the cable and the liner to the contact tip, where current passes into the wire. Shielding gas leaves through the nozzle and covers the arc. Cooling water circulates through the body, the barrel and the cable, and carries heat away from the tip and diffuser. This is why a water-cooled gun can hold a high current for long periods. The body uses internal threaded connections held tight by an anti-vibration compression-fit design.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the AW2

Mount the gun at the correct angle and stick-out in the tooling. Connect the water hoses to the cooler and check for leaks before welding. Fit the power pin, thread the wire and set the gas flow. Weld a test seam. Replace the tip, diffuser and nozzle as they wear, and keep coolant clean so the passages stay open.
