A 400 A gas-cooled MIG torch with adaptable machine connections

The Trafimet ERGOMEGA 40 is a heavy gas-cooled MIG/MAG torch rated at 400 A with CO2 and 350 A with mixed gas at 60% duty cycle (EN 60974-7). It takes 0.8 to 1.6 mm wire, which covers solid and flux-cored wire for structural steel, heavy fabrication and general workshop production without the need for a water cooler.

Its distinguishing point is the connection: besides the EURO-TW version, Trafimet offers it with a 5/8-18UNF power connector and conversion kits, so the same torch can be fitted to wire feeders that do not have a EURO socket.

Connector kits for other wire feeders

The 5/8-18UNF versions use the FB0395-SP power connector and can be adapted with the kits listed on the Trafimet sheet: AR0170 Tweco 1-4, AR0171 Tweco 5, AR0172 Lincoln L, AR0173 Miller M, AR0176 Lincoln L4, AR0177 Lincoln L2, AR0178 Lincoln L3 and AR0179 Lincoln L1. Trafimet notes that these kits are to be assembled by a qualified technician. The EURO-TW version uses connector AR0083 with the Euro metal nut BW0020 and Euro-TW nut FA0027; GM0013 is the grey steel liner for 1.2 to 1.6 mm wire with the EURO-TW connector.

Using a 400 A gas-cooled torch

Gas cooling keeps the installation simple, but the 60% rating means that long continuous runs at the top of the range are better handled by a water-cooled torch. The CuCrZr contact tips listed for this torch resist wear and softening better than plain copper at high current. Choosing the nozzle bore to suit the joint is a balance: the 20 mm nozzle gives wider gas coverage for spray transfer on plate, while 14 or 16 mm nozzles improve access in fillet and root positions. For lighter work, the Trafimet ERGOPLUS 36 MIG torch is another gas-cooled Trafimet option from the Ergoplus range.

Mixed-gas ratings are lower than CO2 ratings because argon-rich arcs radiate more heat back to the nozzle and neck; when a job runs on mixed gas, plan around the 350 A figure rather than the CO2 value.
