A 550 A water-cooled MIG torch rated for continuous duty

The Trafimet ERGOMEGA 550 is the water-cooled heavy-duty torch of the Ergomega range, rated at 550 A with CO2 and 500 A with mixed gas at 100% duty cycle according to EN 60974-7. It takes 0.8 to 1.6 mm wire and is aimed at high-current production welding: thick plate, spray and pulsed transfer, and long seams where a gas-cooled torch would overheat.

Trafimet offers two torch heads, a standard bent neck and a straight 0 degree version, and the torch is supplied with a EURO connector in 3, 4 or 5 m lengths.

Cooling requirements and installation

The 100% rating applies only with coolant flowing. The Trafimet sheet gives a coolant pressure of 2 to 4 bar and a flow of 1.6 l/min, so the welding machine or separate cooler must deliver at least this. Before welding, check that the return hose shows steady flow and that the cooler reservoir is filled with the coolant recommended by the cooler manufacturer. Running a water-cooled torch without coolant damages the neck and cable within a short time.

At the machine end the torch uses the EURO connector AR0052 with Euro metal nut BW0020, Euro nut FA0026 and back box kit MT0564. Head-end spares include the front insulator BW1390-SP, trigger kit MT0563, handle kit MT0561 and pistol grip MT0566.

Straight or bent head

The 50 degree head MG0309-SP is the normal choice for hand welding in flat and horizontal positions. The straight MG0310-SP helps on deep joints and where the torch is guided along a fixture. Both use the same nozzles and tips. The heavy-duty nozzles are 82 mm long; pick the bore by joint access and gas coverage, using 18 or 20 mm for spray transfer on open plate and 14 or 16 mm where the nozzle has to enter a groove or corner. For lighter currents without a cooler, a gas-cooled torch such as the Trafimet ERGOPLUS 36 MIG torch keeps the installation simpler.
