Swagelok 40GX Series 3-Way Ball Valve
Overview
The Swagelok 40GX Series is the three-way switching member of the one-piece 40G ball valve family. Where a two-way valve only opens or closes a line, a 40GX valve selects between two process or sample streams, diverts a stream to one of two destinations, or bypasses an instrument, all from one quarter-turn handle. The valve is made from 316 stainless steel in the 41GX, 42GX and 43GX sizes and carries the same live-loaded, modified PTFE packing as the two-way 40G valves.

Switching Principle
A three-way ball valve has a bored ball that connects one common port to either of two outlets. In the standard Swagelok 40GX Series flow pattern the handle has three positions, with port 1 connected to port 2, a center-off position and port 1 connected to port 3, so a stream can be switched from one outlet to the other with a clear stop in between. The directional handle indicates the orifice position, and the one-piece ball stem keeps the orifice aligned with the ports.
Optional flow paths change the function. The L path uses angle porting to switch port 1 to port 2 or to port 3 with no off position, which is useful when a flow path must always remain open. The H path uses tee porting so that all three ports open or close together, and the HL path uses tee porting with no off position. The catalog warns that cross-port flow can occur in L and HL paths when the orifice is larger than 0.049 in. (1.24 mm), and recommends a smaller orifice where that must be avoided.
Engineering Design of the Swagelok 40GX Series
The Swagelok 40GX Series shares the 40G materials: a 316 stainless steel body and ball stem, powdered-metal 300 series stainless steel side rings, discs and gland, S17700 springs and modified PTFE or UHMWPE packing. The top-loaded packing is live-loaded so it can be adjusted with the valve in line, and the single-piece encapsulated packing has virtually no dead space, which helps purging on analyzer systems. The catalog rates the 41GX, 42GX and 43GX valves to 2500 psig (172 bar).
On the Swagelok 40GX Series, the 43GX size accepts a latch-lock handle that locks each port position, including the center-off position of the three-way valve. When a 40GX valve with an L or H flow path is fitted with a field-assembled handle kit, a powdered-metal stainless steel stop insert is also required, SS-5SI-42G for 41GX and 42GX or SS-5SI-43G for 43GX. Standard cleaning follows Swagelok SC-10, and options include special cleaning, sour gas construction, vent ports and stem extensions as listed in the catalog.

Industrial Applications
The Swagelok 40GX Series is used for analyzer stream selection, calibration gas switching, sample bypass and pressure instrument venting. A typical analyzer panel uses a 40GX valve to select between process sample and zero or span gas, while a plant instrument fitter may use one to switch between a working and a spare transmitter.
