Brand:

Swagelok SS-83KS4 Trunnion Ball Valve, 83 Series

Description

Compact quarter-turn shutoff for 6000 psig instrument lines

The Swagelok SS-83KS4 is a 2-way trunnion ball valve from the Swagelok 83 series with a 316 stainless steel body, 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends and PCTFE seats. It is rated up to 6000 psig (413 bar) and gives a full 0.187 in. flow path with a Cv of 1.6, which makes it a common isolation valve on high-pressure gas panels, analyzer sample lines, hydraulic test stands and chemical injection tubing.

The ball is supported on trunnions so that line pressure cannot push it into the downstream seat; this prevents ball blowout and keeps the quarter-turn torque low. Spring-loaded seats keep the valve sealed when pressure is low and absorb pressure surges, and a bottom-loaded stem cannot be blown out of the body.

Seat choices and the H83 high-pressure version

Seat / series Pressure at 100°F Temperature range
PCTFE (K) or reinforced nylon (N), 83 series 6000 psig (413 bar) 0 to 250°F
PTFE (T), 83 series 1500 psig (103 bar) 0 to 450°F
PEEK (P), 83 series 6000 psig (413 bar) 0 to 450°F
PEEK, H83 series (e.g. SS-H83PS4) up to 10,000 psig (689 bar) 0 to 450°F

Three-way versions such as SS-83XKS4 have a 1/4 in. female NPT bottom port and Cv 0.75. Alloy 400 bodies are ordered by replacing SS with M. Low-temperature L83 versions, locking handles (-LH), coloured handles, SC-11 cleaning and pneumatic or electric actuators are listed as options.

Operating notes

Like all Swagelok ball valves, the 83 series is meant to be fully open or fully closed, not used for throttling. A valve left uncycled for a long time can need a higher initial torque. Seal kits (for example SS-9K-83) contain the stem seals, seats and springs needed for field service.

Documents and quotation

The attached Swagelok catalog gives all ordering numbers, dimensions and actuator options. Quote requests should state the full ordering number with seat and option designators. Further valves are listed under Fittings and Valves.

About brand

Two-ferrule tube fittings made Swagelok a familiar name on instrument air headers, impulse lines and analyzer sample systems. The company has made fluid system components since 1947 and is based in Solon, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Swagelok tube fittings, ball valves, needle valves, quick-connects, face seal fittings and pressure regulators for plants in Oman, checking every ordering number against the manufacturer's catalog before an offer is made.

Swagelok product families listed here

The items on this page cover the small-bore components an instrument technician handles most often. Swagelok tube fittings join metric and fractional tubing without threading or welding. Swagelok ball valves are represented by the 40 series, the 40G series one-piece instrumentation ball valve (for example SS-43GS4) and the three-way pattern listed as 40GX. The SS-1RS4 is an integral bonnet needle valve from the 1 series. VCR metal gasket face seal fittings serve high-purity and vacuum lines, QC series quick-connects are used where lines are coupled and uncoupled often, and the KPR series is a pressure-reducing regulator.

Where Swagelok components are used

Typical duties are transmitter hook-ups, manifolds and impulse tubing, analyzer shelters and sample conditioning panels, chemical injection skids, gas cylinder panels in laboratories, and test benches. In oil and gas service across the GCC, the usual questions are material grade, pressure rating at temperature and, for sour service, whether the manufacturer offers the item to NACE MR0175 requirements.

Ordering Swagelok fittings and valves: what we need

A Swagelok ordering number carries most of the specification. In SS-43GS4, SS is 316 stainless steel, 43G identifies the valve series and size, and S4 is a 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting end connection. Send the complete ordering number including any suffix for handle, seat or cleaning option. If you do not have it, give us the tube outside diameter and wall thickness, body material, end connections on each port, working pressure and temperature, and the fluid. For a KPR regulator we also need inlet pressure, the outlet control range and the port configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pressure rating of the SS-83KS4?
With its standard PCTFE seats it is rated 6000 psig (413 bar) from 0 to 100°F, falling to 1000 psig at 250°F (121°C).
What does the K in SS-83KS4 stand for?
K designates PCTFE seats. Replace it with T for PTFE, N for reinforced nylon or P for PEEK.
What is the Cv of the SS-83KS4?
Cv 1.6 with 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends and a 0.187 in. (4.75 mm) orifice.
Why is a trunnion ball used?
The trunnion holds the ball, preventing ball blowout and keeping operating torque low at high pressure, while spring-loaded seats seal at both low and high pressure.
Is a low-emission certified version available?
Yes. API 641 low fugitive emissions certificates are available for 83 series valves with fluorocarbon FKM stem O-rings.
