A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, “SS” is 316 stainless steel, “810” means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and “-6” is a union. A suffix such as “-8” adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and “M0” marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.

How do I identify a Swagelok part from its ordering number?
Read it from left to right. The prefix is the material (SS for 316 stainless steel, B for brass), the middle block is the series and size, and the last block gives the end connections. SS-1RS4, for instance, is a stainless 1 series needle valve with a regulating stem and 1/4 in. tube fitting ends. Suffixes describe options, so include them.
Can Swagelok tube fitting parts be mixed with other makes of ferrule fitting?
The manufacturer advises against it. Nuts, ferrules and bodies from different makers are made to different dimensions and tolerances, even when the nominal tube size is the same, and a mixed assembly falls outside the published pressure ratings. When you replace a nut and ferrule set, tell us the make of the existing body so the right parts are quoted.
What is the difference between the Swagelok 40 series and 40G series ball valves?
Both are one-piece instrumentation ball valves with the same general purpose. The 40G series is the later design and uses a live-loaded, one-piece encapsulated packing that reduces packing adjustment. Ratings, flow coefficients and panel dimensions are not identical, so check the manufacturer's catalog for the exact size before swapping one for the other in an existing panel.
