Bray Flow-Tek 5000/6000 Three-Piece Full Port Ball Valve

Description

Bray Flow-Tek Series 5000/6000 three-piece full port ball valve

The Series 5000/6000 is a three-piece, full port, quarter-turn ball valve sold under Bray’s Flow-Tek brand. The pair of numbers is a material code: Series 5000 is the stainless steel version (investment cast CF8M, with CF3M weld ends on socket weld valves) and Series 6000 is the carbon steel version (WCB). Both are built for small bore process lines, skid packages and OEM equipment, where a three-piece body is valued because the centre section can be swung out for in-line or out-of-line maintenance while the end caps stay welded or threaded in the pipe. Seven Star LLC supplies Bray valves in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

How the 5000/6000 three-piece body works

The body is made of a centre section and two end caps, held together by four, eight or twelve fasteners depending on size. When the valve is in a pipeline with threaded or socket weld caps, the bolts are loosened and the centre section can be swung out, giving access to the ball, seats and body seals without disturbing the pipe. This is what makes a three-piece valve popular on instrument and sampling lines, chemical injection skids and steam tracing headers, where the pipework is rigid and cannot be sprung apart.

The stem is inserted from inside the body and has a shoulder that sits against the body, so the pressure inside the valve cannot push the stem out. This blowout-proof stem is a safety feature common in good ball valves. The stem packing is adjustable, which allows the packing gland to be tightened as PTFE wears. Stainless steel stops limit the handle to 90° so the operator cannot over-rotate the ball, and the trigger locking handle can be padlocked in position.

Materials list and sizing data in the 5000/6000 brochure

The brochure lists each component with its material, which is useful when a plant asks for a material statement. The 5000 body and end caps are ASTM A351 Gr CF8M, with CF3M on weld ends; the 6000 body and ends are A216-WCB. Balls and stems are ASTM A479 Type 316 in both. Seats, body seals, thrust washer and stem packing are RPTFE or PTFE, and these are the parts included in the repair kits. Washers, body nuts, bolts or studs, gland nut, handle hardware and locking device are SS304. The number of body fasteners depends on the size: four for 1/4 to 2 in., eight for 2-1/2 to 3 in. and twelve for 4 in.

Item Material
Body and end caps (5000) ASTM A351 Gr CF8M
Body and end caps (6000) ASTM A216 WCB
Ball and stem ASTM A479 Type 316
Seats, body seals, thrust washer, packing RPTFE / PTFE (repair kit parts)
Handle, gland nut, fasteners SS304 (carbon steel handle on 3 in. and 4 in.)

Dimension, operating torque, Cv and weight values are tabulated by size in the brochure attached to this page. Use those figures for actuator sizing and add a margin for dry gas, solids or infrequent operation.

Selecting between 5000, 6000 and related Bray valves

Choose Series 5000 when the line medium is corrosive, when the site is coastal or when the pipe is stainless steel. Choose Series 6000 for hydrocarbon, air, steam condensate and utility lines in carbon steel piping, where the cost of stainless is not justified. Within the Flow-Tek range, the Series 80 is a two-piece threaded valve in stainless steel for smaller budgets, and the 7000/8000 and DM7000/DM8000 are other three-piece designs. For large-bore or higher-class pipelines, floating ball valves such as F15/F30 flanged valves or the severe service M1 are more appropriate. Seven Star LLC can compare these for a given line class.

Selection and ordering checklist for 5000/6000

  • Material code: 5000 stainless steel or 6000 carbon steel, and confirm minimum temperature for carbon steel.
  • Size from 1/4 to 4 in., and end connection: NPT threaded or socket weld.
  • Working pressure and temperature, including steam or thermal cycles.
  • Handle or actuator: if automated, note the ISO 5211 pad and torque margin.
  • Special cleaning, oxygen service, marking or documentation requirements.

Installation and maintenance of Series 5000/6000 valves

Use clean pipe and keep the valve in the open position when welding socket ends, so heat does not distort the seats; weld the end caps with the centre section removed when practical. Avoid wrench loads on the centre section, and support heavy actuators from the pipe, not the valve. In service, check the gland nut after thermal cycles; automated valves may need periodic gland nut adjustment according to the brochure. The seats, thrust washer, body seals and stem packing are the wear parts and are supplied as repair kits, so stock a kit for each size in critical service.

Applications of Series 5000/6000 in Oman and the GCC

These valves serve instrument air, nitrogen, chemical injection, sample systems, cooling water and low-pressure steam throughout oil and gas facilities, power plants, desalination units and petrochemical sites in the region. OEM skid builders favour them because of the compact length, locking handle and ready actuator pad. Where the climate brings high temperatures, dust and salt, stainless steel Series 5000 is generally the safer choice outdoors, and handle sleeves and gland packing should be checked in routine rounds.

The butterfly valve type follows the duty. Resilient-seated valves seal on a rubber liner, which makes them economical and bubble-tight for water and utilities. High-performance valves use an offset disc and a PTFE or metal seat for higher pressures and temperatures. Triple-offset valves add a third geometric offset so the disc meets the seat without rubbing, which allows a metal-to-metal, zero-leakage seal in steam and hydrocarbon service.

Where Bray valves are used

In Oman and the GCC, Bray valves and actuators are used in water transmission and distribution, desalination and wastewater plants, district cooling and HVAC, petrochemical and chemical plants, power stations and mining and slurry lines.
