Overview
The Swagelok SS-43GS4 is a two-way, straight-pattern ball valve from the Swagelok 40G Series, built from 316 stainless steel with 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends. It has a 0.187 in. (4.75 mm) orifice and a flow coefficient of 1.4, which makes it the largest-bore 1/4 in. valve in the one-piece 40G range and a common choice where a sample or instrument line needs more flow than a 42G valve can pass. Working Principle
The Swagelok SS-43GS4 turns a bored ball through ninety degrees: with the bore aligned to the line the valve passes flow, and a quarter turn seats the ball against its packing to isolate the line. The one-piece ball stem keeps the stem and orifice aligned, and the directional handle with a double-flat stem shows the position of the orifice, so an operator can read the valve state from the handle alone. The seal does not depend on system pressure, so the valve closes tight at low pressure as well as high.
The packing is a single-piece encapsulated modified PTFE element held by a top-loaded, live-loaded gland with six springs on the 43G size. The springs keep load on the packing as it wears and as temperature cycles, so the Swagelok SS-43GS4 needs less frequent adjustment than a conventional design, and when adjustment is needed the packing bolt can be turned with the valve still in line using a 9 mm deep-well socket. Flow is bidirectional.
Engineering Design of the Swagelok SS-43GS4
The Swagelok SS-43GS4 body is 316 stainless steel to ASTM A276 and A479, and the ball stem is 316 stainless steel. Side rings, side discs, gland and panel nut are powdered-metal 300 series stainless steel, with S17700 springs. Wetted lubricant is silicone based, and the nonwetted surfaces carry a molybdenum disulfide coating. Overall length is 2.39 in. (60.7 mm) with the tube fitting nuts finger-tight, and the panel hole is 25/32 in. (19.8 mm) for panel mounting with a minimum panel thickness of 1/8 in. (3.2 mm).
Suffixes extend the base valve. Add -A for an angle pattern with Cv 0.90, -BL, -GR, -OG, -RD or -YW for a colored nylon handle, -SHD for a stainless steel directional handle, -NH for no handle when the valve will be mounted to an actuator, and -LH for a factory-assembled locking bracket. Production options include -PT for a customer-specified nitrogen test pressure, -SC11 for special cleaning to ASTM G93 Level C and -SG for sour gas service to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.
