Description
The Swagelok SS-H83PF4 takes the 83 series trunnion ball valve to 10 000 psig (689 bar). It uses PEEK seats instead of the PCTFE of the standard 83 series, which also raises the seat temperature rating to 450 F, and has 1/4 in. female NPT ports. It is aimed at high-pressure gas, hydraulic-test, injection and sampling lines where the 6000 psig valve is not enough.

What changes in the H83 series
The H83 shares its features with the 83 series: a trunnion-style ball, a bottom-loaded stem, spring-loaded seats and low operating torque. The differences are the seat material and the pressure class. The catalog lists H83 working pressures of 6000 to 10 000 psig depending on the end connection, with PEEK seats at 0 to 450 F, and the data page gives 10 000 psig (689 bar) at 100 F for this 1/4 in. female NPT valve.
The body is larger than the 83 series equivalent: A is 3.93 in. (99.8 mm) and B is 1.97 in. (50.0 mm) in the catalog table, against 2.94 in. and 1.47 in. for SS-83KF4. Allow the extra length in tight panels.
Pressure, fluids and operation
The catalog gives Cv 1.0 for the 1/4 in. 2-way valve with a 0.187 in. orifice. As with all Swagelok ball valves, the valve is designed for fully open or fully closed use, and a valve that has not been cycled for some time may need higher initial actuation torque. PEEK resists many process fluids, but check chemical compatibility for aggressive media. Hydrogen, high-pressure gas and test-rig service are typical reasons to use a 10 000 psig class valve; verify ratings at the actual operating temperature using the catalog.
The valve is tested to Swagelok WS-22 per the data page. The catalog technical-data table gives H83 ratings for 316 stainless steel only, with no alloy 400 rating.

SS-H83PF4 reads stainless steel, H83 series, PEEK seats (P), female NPT (F), 1/4 in. (4). The catalog lists SS-H83PF2 for 1/8 in. ends and SS-H83PS4 for tube-fitting ends. Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
