Neles Series D Trunnion Mounted Ball Valve

Description

Overview

Neles Series D is a trunnion mounted ball valve designed for demanding on/off and control applications in oil and gas, refining, petrochemical and chemical plants. The design draws on several decades of metal-to-metal seat technology, application-based seat selection and a robust overall construction, which makes the valve a practical choice where soft seats cannot survive heat, solids or cycling. In control duty the same body can be fitted with rotary valve noise attenuation trims, including self-flushing Q-trim and the Q2-trim for gas applications.

Seven Star LLC supplies Neles Series D valves and actuated packages to Oman and the GCC, backed by engineering support in Muscat. Operators who already run the Neles Series X2 modular ball valve will find that the Neles Series D fills the heavier trunnion-mounted niche in the same product family, with larger sizes and higher pressure classes.

Trunnion Ball Working Principle

In a trunnion mounted valve the ball is held in position by upper and lower trunnion bearings rather than floating on the seats. The line pressure therefore pushes the seat against the ball, and the operating torque stays low even at high differential pressure. Large, low-friction bearings give a long cycle life, and the valve keeps good controllability because torque does not rise sharply as pressure increases. In the Neles Series D, spring-loaded metal seats keep continuous contact with the ball so that tightness is maintained during thermal movement and at low pressure.

The ball and stem are manufactured as one piece in the patented Stemball construction, which removes the backlash and dead band that a keyed stem would introduce. That matters when the valve is used to throttle, because there is no hysteresis between positioner output and ball position even at high differential pressure. A double seated design is tight in both directions and supports double block and bleed. In control service the full ball and two throttling stages reduce cavitation and noise, and the inherent characteristic is equal percentage with high rangeability.

Engineering Design of the Neles Series D

The body of the Neles Series D is available in stainless steel ASTM A351 CF8M or carbon steel ASTM A216 WCB, with a hard-chrome coated CF8M ball, AISI 316 trunnion bearings with cobalt-based alloy bushings for high temperature construction, and Inconel-grade seat springs. Seat options span metal seats and PTFE-based soft seats, and a graphite packing and sealing arrangement supports fire-safe duty. Fire safety to API 607 is available on selected seat designs, NACE MR-01-03 or MR-01-75 constructions can be supplied, and EN 10204-3.1 material certificates are available for body, ball and bonnet.

Sizes run from NPS 2 to NPS 36 (DN 50 to DN 900) in ASME Class 150, 300 and 600, in full bore and reduced bore versions. Tightness is ANSI/FCI 70-2 Class V for metal seats and Class VI for soft seats and selected metal seats, and the valve is ISO 15848-1 type approved for low fugitive emissions. For safety service the datasheet describes a complete ESD package from one supplier: the valve, a Neles B1 series actuator and the VG9000 intelligent safety solenoid with automated partial stroke test, with every component certified for use up to SIL 3.

Key Features

The Neles Series D combines safety, control and durability features in one valve platform:

  • Certified for safety systems up to and including SIL 3 when supplied as a full ESD package with a Neles actuator and VG9000 safety solenoid.
  • Metal-to-metal spring-loaded seats stay in contact with the ball and provide durable tightness with a choice of hard facings for different fluids.
  • One-piece Stemball construction removes dead band and hysteresis, so throttling stays accurate under high differential pressure.
  • Double seated, two-way tight design with a double block and bleed seat arrangement simplifies isolation and testing.
  • Low friction and low operating torque from trunnion bearings allow compact actuators and fast stroking.
  • Q-trim and Q2-trim options bring noise attenuation and anti-cavitation performance for blow down, anti-surge and gas let-down service.
  • Handles solids and fibrous fluids, molecular sieve duty and steam control because the ball opening is self-cleaning.
  • Oxygen, cryogenic and high temperature constructions broaden the range from LNG and industrial gases to hot hydrocarbon lines.

Industrial Applications

The manufacturer lists ESD and ESV service, HIPPS, depressurising and blow down, low-noise and anti-cavitation control, cryogenic and high temperature service, high-cycle switching, oxygen service, molecular sieves, solids handling, steam control and natural gas, LNG and LPG. In Oman these map onto wellhead and gathering station shutdown valves, gas processing trains, refinery process units in Sohar and Duqm, LNG-related facilities near Qalhat and power-plant steam and fuel gas systems.

Seven Star LLC helps project teams specify the Neles Series D by matching pressure class, seat code, trim and actuator to the duty and by confirming safety-integrity documentation for ESD installations. For control duty we can propose pairing the valve with a digital positioner such as the Metso Neles ND9000 intelligent valve controller, and for engineers comparing rotary alternatives the Fisher V300 Vee-Ball segmented ball control valve offers a useful reference. Ask us for the Neles Series D datasheet if you want to review seat codes and materials before a formal enquiry.

About brand

Rotary control valves and metal-seated ball valves are the products that built the Neles name, which dates from 1956. Engineers know them from pulp mills, refineries and gas plants, often with a Neles positioner on top. Seven Star LLC lists Neles ball valves and segment control valves and supplies Neles valves and spare parts to process plants in Oman as an independent supplier. Nameplates may also read Metso or Valmet, depending on the year of manufacture.

Neles valve series listed here

Four series are on this page. The T5 is a top entry rotary ball valve for control duty, which can be serviced with the body left in the line. The Series 6D is a soft-seated, full bore trunnion ball valve certified to API 6D for pipeline and isolation service. The X2 belongs to the modular X-series ball valves, and the R-series RE is a V-port segment valve for control of liquids, gases and slurries. The same maker also sells Jamesbury valves.

Ordering Neles valves: what we need

Send the complete type code and the serial number from the identification plate. Otherwise send size, pressure class, end connection, body and trim materials, seat type, actuator and positioner details. For GCC projects add the process data sheet and required material and test certificates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Neles Series D be used for ESD and HIPPS service?
Yes. The datasheet lists ESD, ESV and HIPPS service, and describes a full ESD package from a single supplier with the valve, a Neles B1 actuator and the VG9000 safety solenoid, with components certified for use up to SIL 3.
What size and pressure range does the Neles Series D cover?
The valve is offered from NPS 2 to NPS 36 (DN 50 to DN 900) in ASME Class 150, 300 and 600. Full bore and reduced bore designs are available, and the exact size and class availability depends on the seat construction.
What is the benefit of the Stemball construction?
The ball and stem are made as one piece, which removes dead band and hysteresis. That keeps throttling accurate and gives reliable operation with high differential pressure, which is important for control and anti-surge duty.
What leakage class does the Neles Series D achieve?
Metal seats meet ANSI/FCI 70-2 Class V, while soft seats and selected metal seats reach Class VI. The valve is also ISO 15848-1 type approved for low fugitive emissions, and API 607 fire safe designs are available on selected seats.
