Swagelok SS-4F-2 Inline Particulate Filter, 2 Micron

Description

Inline particulate filter for instrument and sample lines

The Swagelok SS-4F-2 is a 316 stainless steel inline filter with 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends and a replaceable sintered element rated at 2 micrometres. It protects regulators, metering valves, flow sensors, analyzers and small orifices from scale, pipe debris and catalyst fines in gas or liquid instrument lines, and it fits where there is too little room for a tee-type body. The element can be changed by removing the filter from the line.

Technical specifications

Values come from the Swagelok catalog Filters, FW, F and TF Series (MS-01-92) and the Swagelok product page for SS-4F-2. The product page also quotes an upper temperature of 900 F (482 C); the catalog table agrees and starts at -20 F.

Choosing the element and body

The last part of the ordering number selects the element. Sintered elements are offered as 0.5 (designator 05), 2, 7, 15, 60 and 90 micrometre; strainer elements as 40, 140, 230 and 440 micrometre (not for the 2F series). Finer elements pass less flow, so check the flow table against the required rate and the allowed drop. Brass bodies replace SS with B, with much lower ratings of 1000 psig at room temperature.

Ordering number Configuration
SS-2F-2 1/8 in. tube fittings, 2F series
SS-4F-2 1/4 in. tube fittings, 4F series (this model)
SS-6F-2 / SS-8F-2 3/8 in. / 1/2 in. tube fittings
SS-6F-MM-2 6 mm tube fittings, 4F series
SS-4F4-2 1/4 in. female NPT
SS-4F2-2 1/4 in. male NPT
SS-4F-VCR-2 1/4 in. male VCR face seal
SS-4F-K4-2 Replacement element kit for 4F series

Installation and maintenance

Replace the element when the pressure drop climbs or flow falls. Gasket kit SS-4F-K3 is listed for the 4F series. Filters with VCR ends are processed to the Swagelok SC-11 cleaning standard. Where the element must be replaced without removing the body from the line, the tee-type alternative is the Swagelok SS-4TF-7 tee-type filter.

Documents and quotation

The attached catalog contains the flow tables for each pore size, the pressure-temperature table, dimensions and kit part numbers. Confirm the end connections, pore size, working pressure, fluid and cleaning level before ordering. Send the ordering number and quantity for a quotation; similar items are listed under Filter Housings.

About brand

Two-ferrule tube fittings made Swagelok a familiar name on instrument air headers, impulse lines and analyzer sample systems. The company has made fluid system components since 1947 and is based in Solon, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Swagelok tube fittings, ball valves, needle valves, quick-connects, face seal fittings and pressure regulators for plants in Oman, checking every ordering number against the manufacturer's catalog before an offer is made.

Swagelok product families listed here

The items on this page cover the small-bore components an instrument technician handles most often. Swagelok tube fittings join metric and fractional tubing without threading or welding. Swagelok ball valves are represented by the 40 series, the 40G series one-piece instrumentation ball valve (for example SS-43GS4) and the three-way pattern listed as 40GX. The SS-1RS4 is an integral bonnet needle valve from the 1 series. VCR metal gasket face seal fittings serve high-purity and vacuum lines, QC series quick-connects are used where lines are coupled and uncoupled often, and the KPR series is a pressure-reducing regulator.

Where Swagelok components are used

Typical duties are transmitter hook-ups, manifolds and impulse tubing, analyzer shelters and sample conditioning panels, chemical injection skids, gas cylinder panels in laboratories, and test benches. In oil and gas service across the GCC, the usual questions are material grade, pressure rating at temperature and, for sour service, whether the manufacturer offers the item to NACE MR0175 requirements.

Ordering Swagelok fittings and valves: what we need

A Swagelok ordering number carries most of the specification. In SS-43GS4, SS is 316 stainless steel, 43G identifies the valve series and size, and S4 is a 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting end connection. Send the complete ordering number including any suffix for handle, seat or cleaning option. If you do not have it, give us the tube outside diameter and wall thickness, body material, end connections on each port, working pressure and temperature, and the fluid. For a KPR regulator we also need inlet pressure, the outlet control range and the port configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 2 in SS-4F-2 mean?
It is the element designator: a sintered element with a 2 micrometre nominal pore size. Elements remove 95 % of particles larger than the nominal size.
What is the maximum working pressure of the SS-4F-2?
3000 psig (206 bar) from -20 to 100 F, derated to 1640 psig (112 bar) at 900 F.
Can the element be replaced?
Yes. F series filters use replaceable elements, and the element kit for the 4F series is SS-4F-K4- plus the element designator.
What is the orifice size of the 4F series?
0.187 in. (4.75 mm) for 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting versions.
What is the maximum differential pressure across the element?
1000 psig (68.9 bar) for sintered F and TF series elements.
