Swagelok SS-810-7-8 Female Connector, 1/2 in. Tube x 1/2 in. NPT

Description

Some ports are male, and the tube has to go onto them. The Swagelok SS-810-7-8 is the female connector for that job: a 1/2 in. Swagelok tube-fitting end on one side and a 1/2 in. female NPT socket on the other, in 316 stainless steel. It threads onto a male pipe nipple, a gauge stem, a valve outlet or a pump flange spigot and gives a clean 1/2 in. tube take-off.

Why the female thread rating is lower

The catalog pipe-thread table separates male and female ratings. For 1/2 in. 316 stainless steel it lists 7700 psig (530 bar) for a male end but 4900 psig (337 bar) for a female end at ambient temperature, because the thin wall of a female socket is the weak point. That makes SS-810-7-8 a fitting where the thread end, not the tubing, may set the pressure limit. Compare the 4900 psig figure with the tubing rating and with your system design pressure before selecting it.

The hex across flats is 1 1/16 in., larger than the 7/8 in. on the male connector SS-810-1-8, which gives room for the female wall.

Reading the code and its relatives

SS-810-7-8: 316 stainless, 1/2 in. tube, type 7 (female connector), 8 for 1/2 in. NPT. SS-810-7-4 and SS-810-7-6 keep the 1/2 in. tube end but connect to 1/4 in. and 3/8 in. female NPT, and the catalog also lists 3/4 in. NPT. RT suffixes mean ISO tapered threads, RJ and RG are parallel gauge threads, and a female bulkhead connector uses code 71. Female NPT ends use ASME B1.20.1 threads and need thread sealant on the male member.

Metric tube sizes and ISO threads have their own part numbers in the same catalog, so confirm the thread standard of the mating port before ordering.

Fitting it to a port

Wrap or coat the male thread with sealant, thread the connector on by hand, then tighten with a wrench on the pipe-end hex. Do this before making the tube connection so the body orientation is final. Then seat the tube, finger-tighten the nut and complete one and one-quarter turns for the 1/2 in. size, checking with the Swagelok gap inspection gauge.

Metal tubing should be softer than or equal to the fitting material, and the tube surface must be free from scratches. Add support near the fitting, because a connector on a male nipple can fatigue under vibration if the tubing is unsupported.

Selection checks for a female NPT take-off

Before choosing the SS-810-7-8, confirm three points on the mating component. First, the port must be a male 1/2 in. NPT thread to ASME B1.20.1, not a parallel or ISO tapered thread that only looks similar; a thread gauge or the component drawing settles this quickly. Second, compare the system design pressure with the female thread rating given above and with the rating of the tubing you will use, and take the lowest of these as the limit for the connection. Third, check that the tubing material and wall thickness suit both the pressure and the 316 stainless body, as mixing materials can cause galling or galvanic corrosion.

Also consider the service temperature, since the catalog pressure rating is stated at ambient temperature and will be lower at elevated temperature according to the derating factors in the Swagelok catalog.

Thread sealing good practice

The tightness of an NPT joint depends on the sealant and on correct engagement. Apply PTFE tape or a compatible paste sealant to the male thread only, leaving the first thread clear so that no sealant enters the system. Choose a sealant compatible with the process fluid and temperature, particularly for oxygen, instrument air or chemical service. Do not over-tighten the connector in an attempt to stop a leak, because excessive torque can strain the thin wall of the female socket; remake the joint with fresh sealant instead.

Inspection, gauging and reassembly

After the tube end is made up, check the connection with the Swagelok gap inspection gauge to confirm sufficient pull-up. If the tube connection is later disconnected for maintenance, mark the nut and body before removal, and on reassembly tighten the nut to the original position before snugging slightly further, following the catalog reassembly instructions. Inspect the female thread end for signs of leakage during the first pressure test, and record the joint in the inspection log of the skid or panel.

Use on Omani sites

In oil, gas and water facilities across Oman, instrument tubing is often exposed to strong sun, sand and salty coastal air. 316 stainless steel resists general corrosion well, but deposits of salt and dust in crevices can still lead to localized attack over time. Keep fittings clean, avoid trapping moisture under insulation or labels, and include tube fittings in regular walk-down inspections. Support tubing runs properly so that thermal movement between hot days and cooler nights does not load the connection on the male nipple. Where replacement is needed, fit a new connector rather than reusing a body with a damaged thread or hex.

About brand

Two-ferrule tube fittings made Swagelok a familiar name on instrument air headers, impulse lines and analyzer sample systems. The company has made fluid system components since 1947 and is based in Solon, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Swagelok tube fittings, ball valves, needle valves, quick-connects, face seal fittings and pressure regulators for plants in Oman, checking every ordering number against the manufacturer's catalog before an offer is made.

Swagelok product families listed here

The items on this page cover the small-bore components an instrument technician handles most often. Swagelok tube fittings join metric and fractional tubing without threading or welding. Swagelok ball valves are represented by the 40 series, the 40G series one-piece instrumentation ball valve (for example SS-43GS4) and the three-way pattern listed as 40GX. The SS-1RS4 is an integral bonnet needle valve from the 1 series. VCR metal gasket face seal fittings serve high-purity and vacuum lines, QC series quick-connects are used where lines are coupled and uncoupled often, and the KPR series is a pressure-reducing regulator.

Where Swagelok components are used

Typical duties are transmitter hook-ups, manifolds and impulse tubing, analyzer shelters and sample conditioning panels, chemical injection skids, gas cylinder panels in laboratories, and test benches. In oil and gas service across the GCC, the usual questions are material grade, pressure rating at temperature and, for sour service, whether the manufacturer offers the item to NACE MR0175 requirements.

Ordering Swagelok fittings and valves: what we need

A Swagelok ordering number carries most of the specification. In SS-43GS4, SS is 316 stainless steel, 43G identifies the valve series and size, and S4 is a 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting end connection. Send the complete ordering number including any suffix for handle, seat or cleaning option. If you do not have it, give us the tube outside diameter and wall thickness, body material, end connections on each port, working pressure and temperature, and the fluid. For a KPR regulator we also need inlet pressure, the outlet control range and the port configuration.
