Brand:

Swagelok SS-6NBS6 Union-Bonnet Needle Valve, N Series

Description

Severe-service needle valve with a union bonnet

The Swagelok SS-6NBS6 is a needle valve from the Swagelok N series of severe-service union-bonnet valves, with a 316 stainless steel body, 3/8 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends and a non-rotating ball stem tip for repeated leak-tight shutoff. It is rated up to 6000 psig (413 bar) and suits isolation duty on instrument lines, sample points, gauge and transmitter connections, and chemical injection systems where high pressure or temperature rule out lighter needle valves.

The bonnet is held by a separate union nut, so it cannot be backed out by turning the handle, and the stem back-seats in the fully open position. A packing bolt allows the PTFE stem packing to be adjusted with the valve open, and rolled, plated stem threads extend cycle life.

Body materials include 316/316L dual-certified (SSD), alloys 400, 600 and C-276, and titanium. End connections cover NPT, tube fittings, socket weld, VCR and VCO, with angle patterns on 3N, 6N and 12N.

Packing and stem options

Add -P for UHMWPE packing (max. 250°F) or -G for Grafoil packing for high-temperature service; PEEK packing is rated to 600°F. To change the stem, replace NB with NR (regulating), NKR (PCTFE soft seat, max. 200°F) or NTR (PTFE soft seat). API 624 low fugitive emission certificates are available for valves with PTFE packing.

About brand

Two-ferrule tube fittings made Swagelok a familiar name on instrument air headers, impulse lines and analyzer sample systems. The company has made fluid system components since 1947 and is based in Solon, USA. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Swagelok tube fittings, ball valves, needle valves, quick-connects, face seal fittings and pressure regulators for plants in Oman, checking every ordering number against the manufacturer's catalog before an offer is made.

Swagelok product families listed here

The items on this page cover the small-bore components an instrument technician handles most often. Swagelok tube fittings join metric and fractional tubing without threading or welding. Swagelok ball valves are represented by the 40 series, the 40G series one-piece instrumentation ball valve (for example SS-43GS4) and the three-way pattern listed as 40GX. The SS-1RS4 is an integral bonnet needle valve from the 1 series. VCR metal gasket face seal fittings serve high-purity and vacuum lines, QC series quick-connects are used where lines are coupled and uncoupled often, and the KPR series is a pressure-reducing regulator.

Where Swagelok components are used

Typical duties are transmitter hook-ups, manifolds and impulse tubing, analyzer shelters and sample conditioning panels, chemical injection skids, gas cylinder panels in laboratories, and test benches. In oil and gas service across the GCC, the usual questions are material grade, pressure rating at temperature and, for sour service, whether the manufacturer offers the item to NACE MR0175 requirements.

Ordering Swagelok fittings and valves: what we need

A Swagelok ordering number carries most of the specification. In SS-43GS4, SS is 316 stainless steel, 43G identifies the valve series and size, and S4 is a 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting end connection. Send the complete ordering number including any suffix for handle, seat or cleaning option. If you do not have it, give us the tube outside diameter and wall thickness, body material, end connections on each port, working pressure and temperature, and the fluid. For a KPR regulator we also need inlet pressure, the outlet control range and the port configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the pressure rating of the SS-6NBS6?
The 316 SS N series is rated 6000 psig (413 bar) from -65 to 100°F, and 4130 psig (284 bar) at 450°F.
What is the difference between NB and NR stems?
NB is a non-rotating ball tip for repeated leak-tight on-off service; NR is a regulating tip for flow adjustment. NKR and NTR are soft-seat regulating versions.
What is the orifice and Cv of the SS-6NBS6?
The 6N series has a 0.250 in. (6.4 mm) orifice; Swagelok lists Cv 0.86 for the 6N ball-tip valves.
What temperature can the N series handle?
-65 to 450°F with standard PTFE packing; up to 1200°F (648°C) with optional Grafoil packing, subject to material limits.
Why use a union bonnet?
The union-bonnet construction prevents the bonnet from being unscrewed accidentally during operation, and back seating seals the stem when fully open.
