Optrel e684 Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet

Description

Overview

The Optrel e684 is a professional auto-darkening welding helmet from Optrel AG, Switzerland, supplied as article 1006.500 in silver and as 4441.600 in a silver PAPR version. It covers one of the widest dark-shade ranges in the Optrel e-series: ShadeTronic automatically selects shade 5 to 13 according to arc brightness, and in manual mode the user chooses between a 5 to 9 band and a 9 to 13 band. The resting light state is shade 4. Optrel describes the filter as offering realistic colour vision, and its EN 379 classification of 1/1/1/1 includes the top class for angular dependence, meaning the shade stays uniform even when looking through the lens at an angle.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Optrel e684 to industrial customers in Oman and the GCC, including fabrication workshops, shipyards and pipeline contractors, with support from Muscat. The helmet’s very wide shade span makes it a versatile choice for crews that switch between TIG, stick and high-current MIG/MAG or gouging-adjacent work.

How the Optrel e684 Darkens

Generally speaking, an auto-darkening cassette contains liquid crystal layers that turn opaque when electronics detect the bright flash of the arc, while fixed filter layers block UV and IR radiation at all times. In the Optrel e684, three sensors detect the arc; the sensor area can be adjusted with a slide. Light-to-dark switching takes 170 microseconds at 23 degrees C and 110 microseconds at 55 degrees C. The datasheet confirms maximum UV and IR protection across the entire shade range.

ShadeTronic adjusts the protection level automatically to the actual arc, which is convenient when amperage varies through a weld sequence. FadeTronic sets the opening delay from 0.1 s to 2.0 s after the arc stops. Sensitivity is adjustable steplessly with a Super High range, there is a grinding mode for grinding work, and a sleep mode conserves energy between uses.

Engineering Design of the Optrel e684

Unlike rechargeable-battery helmets, the Optrel e684 is powered by a solar cell supported by two CR2032 lithium button batteries, with a battery life of up to 3000 hours according to the datasheet. The cassette measures 90 x 110 x 7 mm and gives a 50 x 100 mm field of view, protected by a front pane and an inner protective pane. In the EN 166 rating the cover plate is class B and the inner protective glass class F; the EN 175 rating for the helmet shell is B.

The mask is made of PA6.6 in silver and is dimensionally stable up to 220 degrees C, with the front cover stable up to 137 degrees C. It comes with the optrel comfort headband. The standard helmet weighs 500 g, and 700 g in the PAPR version. Operating temperature is minus 10 to plus 55 degrees C.

Key Features

Key points from the Optrel e684 technical data:

  • Automatic ShadeTronic dark shade from 5 to 13, or manual selection in two bands, 5 to 9 and 9 to 13.
  • Light state of shade 4 with realistic colour vision.
  • EN 379 class 1 for optical quality, stray light, homogeneity and viewing angle dependency.
  • Three sensors with an adjustable sensor slide and a stepless Super High sensitivity range.
  • Light-to-dark switching in 170 microseconds at room temperature and 110 microseconds at 55 degrees C.
  • FadeTronic opening delay from 0.1 to 2.0 seconds, grinding mode and sleep mode.
  • Solar cell plus two CR2032 batteries, up to 3000 hours battery life.
  • PAPR version listed to EN 12941 TH3 and supplied air version to EN 14594 3B.

Using the Manual Shade Bands

The two manual bands of the Optrel e684 are a practical detail. As general guidance from common shade tables, the lower band of shade 5 to 9 is used for low-current TIG, plasma cutting at moderate amperage and some gas welding, while the upper band of shade 9 to 13 covers most stick, MIG/MAG and flux-cored welding, with the darkest settings reserved for high-current work. Welders should always follow the shade guide in the instruction manual and their site safety rules. For crews who prefer not to choose a shade, ShadeTronic mode lets the cassette select from shade 5 to 13 automatically.

Because the Optrel e684 relies on a solar cell and replaceable CR2032 batteries rather than a rechargeable pack, maintenance teams can keep spare button cells in the stores and change them in the field. Front and inner protective panes are consumables and should be replaced when spatter or scratches begin to blur the view, which also protects the cassette from damage over time.

Applications

According to the manufacturer, the Optrel e684 is suited to all electric welding processes, namely stick welding, MIG/MAG including high-performance GMAW, cored wire welding, TIG, plasma and micro plasma welding and plasma cutting, as well as gas welding and grinding in grinding mode. It is not suitable for laser welding. The reach up to shade 13 is relevant for high-amperage MIG/MAG and flux-cored welding on heavy plate, typical of structural steel, pressure vessel and storage tank work in the Sohar and Duqm industrial areas.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Optrel e684 and its spare front and inner lenses to customers in Muscat, Salalah and throughout the GCC. Buyers outfitting new welding stations frequently pair helmets with equipment such as the ESAB Rebel EMP 285ic or the Lincoln Electric Power Wave S500, and our welding helmets and face protection category lists further options.
