Optrel crystal2.0 Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet

Description

Overview

The Optrel crystal2.0 is an auto-darkening welding helmet from Optrel AG built around a clear shade 2 resting state and simple external controls. Its main article number is 1006.900 (silver), and the datasheet also lists 1006.660 with a white industrial helmet, 4441.900 as a PAPR version and 4441.910 as a PAPR version with white industrial helmet. The protection level is selected from shade 4 to 12 with a rotary knob on the outside of the shell, and sensitivity and grinding mode are also set from outside, so the welder never has to remove the helmet to change settings. At 460 g it is the lightest of the Optrel helmets on our site.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Optrel crystal2.0 to contractors, workshops and plant maintenance departments in Oman and the GCC, with stock coordination and technical support from Muscat. The combination of a near-clear view and outside-mounted controls is appreciated by welders wearing gloves on site, where opening a helmet to reach an internal cassette is impractical.

Working Principle

All auto-darkening helmets work on the same general idea: sensors register the light of the arc, and the electronics darken a liquid crystal filter, while built-in UV and IR filters provide protection in every state. The Optrel crystal2.0 uses three sensors positioned above the eyes. It switches from light to dark in 100 microseconds at room temperature and in 70 microseconds at 55 degrees C, and returns to the light state within 0.1 to 2 s after the arc stops. UV and IR protection is maximum in the entire shade range.

Sensitivity is adjustable steplessly, with a Super High sensitivity range for weak arcs, and grinding mode activation sits on the outside of the shell together with the shade knob. The battery compartment is located in the satellite on the side of the helmet. The datasheet also describes adjustable headband position, angle of inclination and headband size, letting each user fit the helmet properly.

Engineering Design of the Optrel crystal2.0

The cassette size is 90 x 110 x 9.5 mm with a 50 x 100 mm field of view, protected by a non-reflective cover lens and an inner protective screen. Power comes from a solar cell plus two lithium CR2032 button cells, with an operating life of approximately 2500 hours. The shell is PA6.6, silver with applied graphics, dimensionally stable up to 220 degrees C, and the front panel is stable up to 130 degrees C.

A notable figure for hot climates is the operating temperature range of minus 10 to plus 70 degrees C listed in the technical data, wider at the top end than the other Optrel helmets in this group. EN 379 ratings are optical class 1, stray light 1, homogeneity 1 and viewing angle dependency 2; the EN 166 cover plate and EN 175 helmet shell are both class B.

Key Features

The Optrel crystal2.0 technical data highlights the following characteristics.

  • Shade 2 light state for a clear view before and after welding.
  • Dark shade 4 to 12 selected by an external rotary knob.
  • External stepless sensitivity adjustment with Super High range and external grinding mode.
  • Three sensors above the eyes and 100 microsecond switching at room temperature.
  • Solar cell with two CR2032 cells, approximately 2500 hours operating time.
  • Low weight of 460 g with adjustable headband position, tilt and size.
  • Operating temperature up to plus 70 degrees C.
  • Variants with white industrial helmet and with PAPR available under separate article numbers.

Fit, Care and Battery Replacement

Comfort determines whether a helmet is worn properly through a full shift. The Optrel crystal2.0 lets the user set the headband position, the angle of inclination and the headband size, so the shield sits at the correct distance from the face and does not tip forward when the welder looks down at a pipe joint. Its 460 g weight reduces load on the neck during overhead and vertical welding.

The two CR2032 cells sit in the satellite on the side of the shell, where they can be replaced without tools, while the solar cell supports them during welding. The datasheet gives an operating time of approximately 2500 hours. As general good practice, the non-reflective cover lens should be cleaned with a soft cloth and replaced when spatter or scratches reduce visibility; a clean cover lens also ensures the three sensors above the eyes detect the arc reliably. The ADF cleaning instructions and cleaning cloth supplied with the Optrel crystal2.0 cover this routine.

Applications

Optrel lists all electrical welding processes for the Optrel crystal2.0: stick welding, MIG/MAG including high-performance GMAW, cored wire welding, TIG, plasma and micro plasma welding and plasma cutting. It is not suitable for laser welding. The variant with a white industrial helmet (hard hat) suits construction sites and plants where head protection is mandatory, common on oil and gas facilities, refinery turnarounds and power plant outages in Oman.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Optrel crystal2.0 and its variants to customers in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm, Salalah and across the GCC. Welding teams often add helmets to orders for machines such as the Lincoln Electric Power Wave S500 and the ESAB Rebel EMP 285ic, and other options are shown in the welding helmets and face protection category.
