Kemppi Master S 500 Stick (MMA) Welding Machine
Overview
The Kemppi Master S 500 is the larger of the two Master S industrial stick welding machines from Kemppi. It is built to weld all kinds of covered electrodes and is also suitable for carbon arc gouging, which makes it a workhorse for heavy fabrication, pipeline tie-ins and repair shops. With 500 amperes available at 60 percent duty cycle and 390 amperes at 100 percent, it can run large-diameter electrodes for long periods, and its built-in constant voltage mode lets it act as the power source for Kemppi voltage-sensing wire feeders and in-line TIG units.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Kemppi Master S 500 to contractors and fabrication shops throughout Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We help customers specify welding and earth cables, remote controls and transport options, and we supply the electrodes needed for structural, pipeline and maintenance work from our welding consumables range.
Operating Principle
Manual metal arc welding, described in general terms, relies on a constant-current source so that the arc current stays steady when the welder’s arc length varies. The Kemppi Master S 500 provides stepless current adjustment and two arc-shaping functions set from the control panel. HotStart raises the current briefly at the strike to help the electrode ignite cleanly on cold metal, and ArcForce adds current when the arc shortens, which in general practice helps prevent the electrode from sticking, especially with basic and cellulosic types used on pipe.
A TIG mode is also provided for lift-type DC TIG welding, and polarity is chosen through the connection of the welding and earth cables to the plus and minus sockets. In constant voltage (CV) mode, the machine becomes a parent power supply for Kemppi voltage-sensing wire feed systems such as ArcFeed and for in-line TIG solutions such as the MasterTig LT 250. Both Master S models also include a voltage reduction device (VRD) designed to keep the open-circuit voltage below 35 volts.
Engineering Design of the Kemppi Master S 500
The Kemppi Master S 500 is a three-phase unit for 380 to 440 V supplies at 50/60 Hz, with a delayed 35 A fuse and a rated power of 26 kVA at maximum current. The housing measures 570 by 270 by 370 mm and the machine weighs 23.5 kg. The front panel carries amperage and voltage displays, pilot lamps for power, overheating, CV mode and VRD status, and controls for ArcForce, HotStart, remote control and welding mode. A display cover comes as standard to protect the panel from sparks, dust and scratches.
The Kemppi Master S 500 has protection class IP23S and EMC class A. The operating temperature range is minus 20 to plus 50 degrees Celsius, a wider upper limit than many machines, which is meaningful in Gulf summer conditions. The manual specifies a minimum short-circuit power of 4.8 MVA for the supply network. Power factor and efficiency at 100 percent duty cycle are listed at 0.90 and 0.89 respectively.
Installation and Connection Notes
According to the operating manual, the Kemppi Master S 500 should stand on a sturdy, level and dry surface inclined no more than 15 degrees, preferably on a carriage above floor level, with at least 20 cm of free space in front and behind for cooling air. For MMA, the welding cable is typically connected to the positive socket and the earth return cable to the negative socket; for TIG the welding cable goes to the negative socket and a separate TIG torch with gas valve is required. Kemppi also advises fastening the earth clamp directly onto a clean, paint-free area of the workpiece. Because the IP23S rating allows outdoor storage only, the Kemppi Master S 500 should not be operated in rain.
Key Features
Practical advantages of the Kemppi Master S 500 drawn from the manufacturer data:
- It delivers 500 A at 40 V in MMA at 60% duty cycle and 390 A at 35.6 V at 100% duty cycle, measured at 40 degrees Celsius.
- Covered electrodes from 1.6 mm up to 7.0 mm in diameter can be welded.
- Carbon arc gouging is supported for back-gouging and defect removal.
- HotStart and ArcForce are adjustable from the panel to tune ignition and arc stiffness for each electrode type.
- A TIG mode allows DC TIG welding from the same power source.
- The CV mode powers Kemppi voltage-sensing wire feeders and in-line TIG units for added process flexibility.
- The integrated VRD maintains open-circuit voltage below 35 V for improved operator safety.
- The operating range up to plus 50 degrees Celsius suits hot workshops and outdoor sites.
Industrial Applications
In Oman’s oil and gas sector, the Kemppi Master S 500 suits cross-country and in-plant pipeline welding with cellulosic and low-hydrogen electrodes, tank construction, and heavy structural steel for process plants and power stations. Its gouging capability helps fabrication shops in Sohar and Duqm prepare back-gouged double-sided welds and remove defects before repair, and the high duty cycle supports multi-shift work.
The CV mode adds value for contractors who want to run a voltage-sensing wire feeder for flux-cored welding on site from the same machine, while the TIG mode handles root passes when a separate TIG unit is not available. Seven Star LLC supplies the Kemppi Master S 500 alongside electrodes, gouging consumables and accessories, providing a single source for welding spreads in Muscat, the interior and across the GCC.
