Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 Portable Stick Welder
Overview
The Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 is a compact, single-phase inverter welder for manual metal arc (stick) welding, with basic lift-arc TIG capability. Weighing just 5.4 kg without its supply cable, it is intended, in Kemppi’s words, for professional use in the metal industry, on work sites and in repair welding. The machine is designed to tolerate fluctuations in input voltage, which makes it practical on generators and at the end of long extension cables, two situations that are routine on construction and maintenance sites.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 across Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. It pairs naturally with the welding electrodes we supply from several manufacturers, and our team can help customers choose electrode types and sizes, the optional TIG torch and remote control, and the VRD variant where site rules call for reduced open-circuit voltage.
Operating Principle
In general terms, stick welding strikes an arc between a flux-coated consumable electrode and the workpiece. The coating burns to form a gas shield and a slag layer, so no external gas bottle is needed, which is why the process remains popular outdoors and in windy conditions. A constant-current power source keeps the welding current steady as the arc length changes with the welder’s hand. The Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 achieves this with an IGBT inverter, which Kemppi says delivers reliable arc ignition and welding performance with all electrode types.
The power source also uses power factor correction (PFC) technology to make optimum use of a single-phase supply. The manual lists a power factor of 0.99 and an efficiency of 84 percent at 100 percent duty cycle in MMA, with a no-load power of only 30 W. For light TIG work, the machine starts the arc by the lift-arc method: the tungsten touches the workpiece and is lifted to ignite, avoiding high-frequency ignition. Gas is controlled by a valve on the torch, as described in the operating manual.
Engineering Design of the Kemppi Minarc Evo 180
The Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 measures 361 by 139 by 267 mm including its handle and is delivered with a fabric shoulder strap and clips, so the machine and its cable set can be carried together; Kemppi notes that it should not be operated while hanging from the strap. Welding and earth return cables, including electrode holder and earth clamp, are supplied in the delivery package. The supply cable is an H07RN-F 3G1.5 lead of 3 m.
The casing is rated IP23S, which Kemppi notes allows outdoor storage, and the machine should be protected from rain during use. Temperature class is F (155 degrees Celsius), EMC class A, and the operating range is minus 20 to plus 40 degrees Celsius. Standards listed are IEC 60974-1, IEC 60974-10 and IEC 61000-3-12. A separate Minarc Evo 180VRD model holds open-circuit voltage at 30 V, and Australian versions use a 12 V VRD limit.
Care and Maintenance
The operating manual recommends simple daily checks for the Kemppi Minarc Evo 180: clean the electrode holder and the TIG gas nozzle, inspect and regrind the tungsten, confirm that welding and earth cable connections are tight, replace damaged leads, and keep at least 20 cm of free space around the unit for cooling air. If the overheating indicator lights, the thermostat has switched the output off; the Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 resets automatically once it has cooled. Storage should be clean and dry, out of direct sun above plus 25 degrees Celsius.
Key Features
The points below summarise what the Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 offers to site and maintenance welders:
- It delivers 170 A in MMA at 30% duty cycle and 115 A at 100% duty cycle, measured at plus 40 degrees Celsius.
- TIG output reaches 180 A at 35% duty cycle and 130 A at 100%, using lift-arc ignition.
- Its weight of 5.4 kg, or 5.85 kg with the connection cable, makes it easy to carry on a shoulder strap.
- Stick electrodes from 1.5 to 4.0 mm in diameter can be used.
- Power factor correction gives a power factor of 0.99, allowing efficient use of single-phase 230 V supplies.
- The inverter tolerates input voltage fluctuations, so it can work from generators and long supply cables.
- A VRD version is offered for sites that require reduced open-circuit voltage.
- An optional R10 hand-held remote control and a TX163 TIG torch extend the machine’s capabilities.
Industrial Applications
The Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 is a practical tool for maintenance technicians at oil and gas facilities, water treatment and desalination plants, and utility substations in Oman, where small repairs to supports, brackets, gratings and guards need a welder that can be carried up ladders or into pipe racks. Its generator tolerance suits remote locations in the interior and along pipeline corridors where grid power is not available.
Contractors, agricultural workshops and facility maintenance teams in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah also use compact stick inverters like the Kemppi Minarc Evo 180 for general repair, tack welding before final welding with larger equipment, and light TIG jobs on stainless fittings. Seven Star LLC supplies the machine together with rutile, basic and cellulosic electrodes from our consumables range, so customers can source power source and filler metal from one supplier.
