Badger Meter Dynasonics TFX-5000 Clamp-On Ultrasonic Meter

Description

Badger Meter Dynasonics TFX-5000 clamp-on transit-time ultrasonic flow and energy meter

The Badger Meter Dynasonics TFX-5000 is a clamp-on transit-time ultrasonic meter that measures volumetric flow, and in its energy version also heating and cooling energy, without touching the liquid. It covers pipes from 0.5 in to 48 in (DN 15 to DN 1200) with a choice of transducer sets, so one transmitter platform serves small chilled-water lines, process pipework and large water mains. It is the transit-time counterpart of the Dynasonics DFX Doppler meter, and it suits clean liquids or liquids with a small amount of solids or gas. Seven Star LLC supplies the TFX-5000 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page sets out the specifications and the choices that define an order.

How the TFX-5000 measures

The transducers work alternately as transmitters and receivers. An ultrasound pulse travelling with the flow arrives slightly earlier than one travelling against it, and the time difference is used to calculate the fluid velocity in the closed pipe. The measurement is bi-directional and most effective in sonically conductive liquids with low concentrations of suspended solids. The meter applies Reynolds number, ultrasonic speed and temperature compensation. In the energy version, two clamp-on Pt100/Pt1000 RTDs measure the inlet and outlet temperatures of a heat exchanger or loop, and the transmitter combines them with the flow to compute heat or cooling rate and total energy.

Certification and hazardous locations

All models are listed for general safety (cCSAus, CE and UKCA). For hazardous locations the data sheet lists the transmitter and certain transducers for Class I Division 2 and Zone 2 / Zone 22 areas (cCSAus, ATEX, UKEX and IECEx), each with exclusions: the UZ, HZ, JZ and KZ transducers, the auxiliary dry contact card and the AquaCUE/BEACON endpoints are not available with some of the certification options. The certified versions require flexible conduit. Note that these are Zone 2 and Division 2 approvals, not Zone 1; the specifier must confirm that the area classification of the installation is covered.

Selection and ordering checklist for the TFX-5000

  • Pipe outside diameter, wall thickness, material and lining; the data sheet lists metals, PVC, CPVC, HDPE, PTFE and PVDF among the pipe materials checked.
  • Fluid and temperature; choose HZ for up to 176 °C.
  • Flow meter or heating/cooling energy meter; RTD kit and cable length for energy duty.
  • Transducer family and cable length (up to 90 m, longer on request).
  • Power supply: DC/AC low voltage or mains AC.
  • Outputs and fieldbus: Modbus, BACnet, EtherNet/IP, 4…20 mA, pulse.
  • Hazardous location certification option and display option (Bluetooth or not).

Installation and commissioning

Allow at least ten diameters of straight pipe upstream and five downstream from a single elbow, and mount the transducers on a clean, smooth section of pipe with the correct spacing, which the transmitter calculates from the entered pipe and fluid data. Use couplant as required and secure the track or brackets. Configure with the keypad, USB or the SoloCUE app over Bluetooth. Compare the first readings with a known flow or a reference meter, check signal strength and make sure the pipe is full. The unit stores the last 150 alarms and warnings, which helps with diagnostics.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

The manufacturer lists HVAC, data centres, industrial process, wastewater, oil and gas, refining, chemical and petrochemical, drinking water and distribution monitoring among its markets. In the Gulf, the TFX-5000 is a sensible tool for district cooling and chilled water energy metering, cooling water headers, seawater and process water lines where a full-bore meter is not justified, and for checking existing meters without cutting pipe.

About brand

Badger Meter is an American maker of flow measurement and water metering products, incorporated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 8 March 1905 to make frost-proof water meters. Its early meters had a cast-iron bottom plate that broke when water froze, protecting the mechanism. In 1988 the company introduced automatic meter reading by putting radios on water meters. Badger Meter is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Seven Star LLC lists Badger Meter Recordall Compound and Turbo Series water meters and the ModMAG M2000, and supplies Badger Meter flow meters to utilities, contractors and plants in Oman and the GCC.

Recordall Turbo Series meters are turbine meters for potable cold water in commercial and industrial service, in sizes from 1-1/2 to 12 in. Recordall Compound Series meters combine a turbine chamber for high flow with a positive displacement chamber for low flow, so the meter keeps registering when demand drops to a trickle. The ModMAG M2000 is an electromagnetic meter with no moving parts in the flow, for water, wastewater and other conductive liquids, with outputs such as Modbus RTU, HART, Profibus DP, BACnet and EtherNet/IP.
