ABB ACS480-04-018A-4 General Purpose Drive 7.5 kW 17 A

Description

A 7.5 kW ACS480-04 for 400 V machines

ACS480-04-018A-4 is an ABB ACS480 general purpose drive in module construction for three-phase 380 to 480 V supplies. The hardware manual lists 7.5 kW at 17 A nominal output on frame R3, a body 172 mm wide, 220 mm high and 208 mm deep that weighs 2.5 kg in IP20 form. The 7.5 kW rating opens frame R3, used for mid-size fans, pumps and compressors.

The standard unit includes Safe Torque Off, coated circuit boards, support for induction, permanent magnet and ABB SynRM motors and a cold configuration adapter connection for CCA-01. Neighbouring ratings are listed in AC drives, and ABB’s wall-mounted general purpose drive is described on the ABB ACS580 drive page.

Current ratings for the 17 A type

The IEC ratings table gives nominal use 17 A / 7.5 kW, light duty 16.2 A / 7.5 kW and heavy duty 12.6 A / 5.5 kW, with a maximum current of 22.7 A. The input current is 23.4 A without a choke and 17 A with a choke. Take the motor nameplate current as the starting point, not the kilowatt figure alone.

Fuse choices are 32 A gG type OFAF000H32 (minimum short-circuit current 256 A) and 63 A gR type 170M2698; ABB also lists S 203P-B 32 as a circuit breaker. Typical power loss is 259 W, air flow 128 m3/h and noise 66 dB(A).

Derating matters in warm or high-frequency applications: the factor for this type is 0.68 at 8 kHz and 0.51 at 12 kHz. At +50 to +60 degrees C the output current falls by 1% per additional degree, and above 1000 m by 1% per 100 m. ABB permits 4 kHz without derating.

Mount the module with 75 mm of free space above and below. Frame R3 measures 172 x 220 x 208 mm and weighs 2.5 kg (UL Type 1 kit: 329 mm high, 3.2 kg). Motor cables up to 100 m are allowed for operation; EMC limits are stricter: 30 m for category C3 and 10 m for C2 with the internal filter, or 40 m for C1, C2 and C3 with the optional external filter.

How the code is built

Read ACS480-04-018A-4 in four parts: ACS480 is the series, 04 is the module construction, 018A the size from the ratings table and 4 the 380 to 480 V input. With no options the drive is IP20, cabinet-optimised, with the ACS-AP-S panel, RIIO-01 module, C2 filter, STO and brake chopper. Option codes are added with a plus sign, for example K458 for FSCA-01 RS-485, K469 for FECA-01 EtherCAT, K470 for FEPL-02 POWERLINK and K475 for FENA-21 Ethernet.

Other manual data: switching frequencies of 2, 4, 8 or 12 kHz, a fundamental power factor of 0.98 at nominal load, induction, permanent magnet and SynRM motor control and a short-circuit proof motor output.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
