3M Peltor X5A Over-the-Head Earmuffs, NRR 31 dB
Overview
The 3M Peltor X5A is the highest-attenuation over-the-head model in the 3M Peltor X Series of passive earmuffs, carrying a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 31 dB. The X Series spans NRR values from 21 to 31 dB so that safety managers can match the attenuation of the earmuff to the noise exposure of the worker, avoiding both under-protection and the isolation that comes from over-protection. The 3M Peltor X5A sits at the top of that range and is intended for the loudest industrial environments, combining a twin headband for balance with large, deep earcups and soft, wide cushions.
Seven Star LLC supplies the 3M Peltor X5A, its hard hat attached sister model X5P3E and the HYX5 hygiene kits to oil and gas operators, power stations, fabrication yards, quarries and cement plants across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. We provide the 3M datasheet, help match X Series models to measured noise levels, and offer engineering support from our Muscat office.
Working Principle
A passive earmuff reduces noise by enclosing the ear in a rigid cup that is sealed against the head. The cup blocks airborne sound, the foam inside absorbs energy that enters the cavity, and the cushion seal prevents sound from leaking around the edge. In the 3M Peltor X5A, 3M uses foam earcup inserts and spacers designed to improve attenuation and a cushion foam technology for an effective acoustic seal. The result is high attenuation across the frequency range, with mean values of 41.1 dB at 500 Hz, 43.0 dB at 1000 Hz and 44.0 dB at 4000 Hz in the datasheet test.
The NRR is a single number derived from those laboratory measurements under the US EPA rule 40 CFR 211, which requires testing to ANSI S3.19-1974. 3M notes that many users receive less protection than the NRR because of variation in fit, fitting skill and motivation, and recommends reducing the NRR by 50 percent to estimate typical workplace protection. Eyeglasses, goggle or respirator straps under the cushions, long hair and items such as pencils or earbuds can all break the seal and reduce performance.
Engineering Design of the 3M Peltor X5A
The twin headband is made of stainless steel wire with a TPE, polyester, polypropylene and acetal cover and sleeve, and on the headband models the metal parts are covered with non-conductive material. 3M describes these models as electrically insulated, sometimes called dielectric, for use where there is a low voltage hazard below 440 V ac; tested with a method based on EN397, leakage current did not exceed 1.2 mA. The earcups are ABS and TPU, the inserts are PU foam, and the cushions are PU foam with PVC covers. The X5A weighs 12.38 oz according to the datasheet.
Fitting the 3M Peltor X5A is straightforward: the cups are placed so the cushions fully enclose the ears, the height of each cup is adjusted while holding the headband down until the fit is tight and even, and the headband sits straight on the head. Cushions and inserts are replaceable with the HYX5 hygiene kit, which 3M recommends fitting at least twice a year for noise reduction, hygiene and comfort. The earmuffs should be cleaned only on the outside with mild soap and water and never stored above 55°C.
Key Features
The 3M datasheet lists the following features for the 3M Peltor X5A and the X Series.
- NRR 31 dB, the highest attenuation in the X Series headband range.
- Twin headband design for outstanding balance and comfort over long shifts.
- Electrically insulated wire headband for low voltage hazards below 440 V ac.
- Soft, wide cushions that maintain comfortable pressure around the ears.
- Foam earcup inserts and spacers that help improve attenuation.
- Cushion foam technology for an effective acoustic seal and reliable protection.
- Easy-to-replace cushions and inserts with the HYX5 hygiene kit.
- Matching hard hat attached version X5P3E, also rated NRR 31 dB.
Industrial Applications
3M lists metal processing, automotive, airports, construction, textile manufacturing, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, mining and quarrying, cement manufacturing, printing, woodworking, heavy engineering, foundries and steelworks as typical applications. In Oman the 3M Peltor X5A suits gas compression stations, power and desalination plant turbine halls, diesel generator rooms, blasting and grinding shops, crushers in quarries, and heavy fabrication areas where noise is high enough that lower-rated muffs are not sufficient. Where a hard hat is mandatory, the X5P3E fits directly on many industrial helmets.
Seven Star LLC supplies the 3M Peltor X5A for welding and fabrication workshops alongside machines such as the Kemppi Master S 500 stick welding power source, the Lincoln Electric Power Wave S500 and the Miller Maxstar 400 DC TIG and stick power source, where grinding, arc gouging and hammering create high noise. As general guidance, hearing protector selection should be based on a noise survey, and very high attenuation is best reserved for the areas that need it so that workers can still hear alarms and instructions elsewhere.

3M product lines listed here
The listing follows five separate 3M lines, each with its own part numbering. Peltor X Series earmuffs are graded by attenuation, and the X5A is the over-the-head model with an NRR of 31 dB. The 6000 series half facepiece comes in three sizes (6100 small, 6200 medium, 6300 large) and takes 3M bayonet cartridges and filters, which are ordered separately. Speedglas 9100 is the auto-darkening welding helmet family, supplied with different filter sizes and with or without side windows. Scotch Super 33+ is the vinyl electrical tape most specifications call for by name. Liqui-Cel membrane contactors, such as the EXF-4x13, add or remove dissolved gases in liquid streams.Where 3M products are used
Hearing, respiratory and welding protection from 3M is specified by HSE departments in refineries, fabrication yards, power plants and construction sites across the GCC. Super 33+ tape is used for primary insulation and jacketing on low-voltage splices and for phase marking in panels. Liqui-Cel contactors sit in water treatment and process skids where oxygen or carbon dioxide has to be stripped from water, for example ahead of boilers or in ultrapure water loops.Ordering 3M items: what we need
