3M Scotch Super 33+ Vinyl Electrical Tape
Overview
3M Scotch Super 33+ is the professional grade black vinyl electrical tape that most electricians picture when they think of a dependable insulating tape. It is a nominal 7 mil (0.178 mm) elastic PVC film coated on one side with a non-corrosive, rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive, and it is listed to UL 510 as insulating tape, listed to CSA C22.2 No.197 as PVC insulating tape, and carries the VDE mark for IEC 60454-3-1 Type 7. The 3M Scotch Super 33+ is designed to stay flexible and adhesive across a wide temperature span, to resist sunlight and cold, and to be flame retardant, which is why it is specified for critical indoor and outdoor jobs where a general-use vinyl tape is not considered good enough.
Seven Star LLC supplies 3M Scotch Super 33+ to electrical maintenance departments, motor rewind shops, switchgear and panel builders and EPC contractors across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. From oil and gas stations in the interior to substations around Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and Salalah, we provide the 3M datasheet, help select roll widths for the job, and offer engineering support from our Muscat office.
Working Principle
An insulating tape has three jobs: it must add dielectric strength over a conductor or joint, it must conform tightly enough to exclude air and moisture, and it must stay in place for years without unwinding. The 3M Scotch Super 33+ achieves the first through its PVC backing, which the datasheet rates at a minimum dielectric strength of 1000 V/mil (39.4 kV/mm) under standard conditions and still 90 percent of that value after high humidity conditioning, with insulation resistance of at least 1 × 1012 ohms in high humidity. It achieves the second through elasticity: minimum elongation is 225 percent at 23°C and 125 percent at -18°C, so the tape can be stretched as it is wound and then recovers to grip the work.
The third job belongs to the adhesive. The rubber-based adhesive gives a minimum adhesion to steel of 2.2 N/cm at room temperature and 3.3 N/cm at -18°C, and similar adhesion to its own backing, so successive half-lapped layers bond to each other rather than relying only on the first wrap. As a general engineering note, a vinyl tape alone is not a moisture seal for medium voltage work; the 3M datasheet itself recommends it as an overwrap on rubber splicing or mastic tape where reducing moisture ingress matters.
Engineering Design of the 3M Scotch Super 33+
The construction is deliberately simple: a black PVC film backing that is flame retardant and passes the UL 510 sunlight and cold resistance tests, and a single coat of rubber-based adhesive formulated to be non-corrosive to copper and aluminium conductors. Minimum tensile strength is listed as 25.3 N/cm (14.4 lb/in) on the nominal thickness. The datasheet also notes compatibility with most solid dielectric cable insulations and with rubber and synthetic splicing compounds, which is important when the 3M Scotch Super 33+ is used to jacket a splice built from other materials.
Installation technique matters as much as material. 3M specifies half-lapped layers wound with enough tension to reduce the tape to roughly five eighths of its original width, wrapping uphill from a smaller diameter onto a larger one, and applying the final wrap with no tension so the end does not flag. On pigtail splices the tape is taken beyond the ends of the wires and folded back to leave a cushion against cut-through. Shelf life is five years from the date of manufacture when stored between 10 and 27°C at below 75 percent relative humidity, a point worth remembering in hot Gulf warehouses.
Key Features
The main reasons engineers specify 3M Scotch Super 33+ are summarised below.
- UL 510 listed as insulating tape for primary insulation up to 600 V on joints and splices.
- CSA C22.2 No.197 listed as PVC insulating tape for primary insulation up to 1000 V.
- IEC 60454-3-1 Type 7 classification with a 90°C thermal index and VDE mark certificate.
- Flame retardant backing that passes the UL 510 sunlight and cold resistance requirements.
- Thin 0.178 mm construction keeps bulk low for harnessing and bundling wires.
- High elongation lets the tape conform tightly around irregular splices and connectors.
- Non-corrosive rubber-based adhesive that holds in cold conditions as well as at room temperature.
- Compatible with common solid dielectric insulations and with rubber and mastic splicing tapes.
Industrial Applications
In the Gulf, the 3M Scotch Super 33+ is used daily for low voltage termination work in motor terminal boxes, control panels and lighting circuits, for phase identification overwraps, and for repairing damaged cable jackets on LV cable (up to 600 V under UL or 1000 V under CSA as primary insulation). On medium and high voltage joints it is the standard mechanical jacket applied over rubber splicing tape and mastic, protecting the softer materials underneath from abrasion and UV. Oil and gas facilities, desalination and water plants, district cooling plants and industrial estates in Sohar and Salalah all use it as a general purpose maintenance consumable.
Because conditions in Oman range from hot coastal humidity to dry desert heat, choosing a tape with documented UV and temperature performance is a practical decision rather than a luxury. Seven Star LLC supplies 3M Scotch Super 33+ alongside related cable accessories such as the CMP E1FW explosive atmosphere cable gland and Lapp OLFLEX Classic 110 control cable, so maintenance teams can source a complete termination package, and we can also support MV projects that use items like the Crompton Greaves 17.5 kV porcelain bushing.
