Haws 8317 AXION MSR Emergency Shower and Eye/Face Wash

Description

8317 is the Haws AXION MSR free-standing combination of an emergency drench shower and an eye/face wash on one galvanized steel stanchion. A 20 gpm self-regulating shower and a 3.7 gpm laminar eyewash share a single 1-1/4 in. supply, so one installation answers both a body-drench and an eye-flush emergency at the same spot.

One post, two emergency responses

The 8317 stands on a powder-coated cast-iron floor flange 9 in. (22.9 cm) in diameter and is built from 1-1/4 in. IPS Schedule 40 hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe and fittings. Haws pre-builds and water/pressure tests the eye/face wash and valve assembly at the factory, which the datasheet gives as the reason installation time is reduced.

The eyewash uses the AXION MSR head, whose inverted directional laminar flow is described by Haws as sweeping contaminants away from the nasal cavity with what it calls Zero Vertical Velocity. The shower is a green ABS plastic showerhead measuring 10-5/8 in. with an integral self-regulating 20 gpm flow control. The pull-rod shower valve and the push-flag eyewash valve are chrome-plated brass stay-open ball valves with stainless steel ball and stem.

Key features as printed in the datasheet

  • Combination shower plus eye/face wash on a single free-standing unit.
  • Showerhead flow control: integral self-regulating 20 gpm; eyewash flow control: integral 3.7 gpm.
  • Chrome-plated brass stay-open ball valves with stainless steel ball and stem for shower and eyewash.
  • 8 in. x 10-3/4 in. (20.3 x 27.3 cm) universal combination emergency sign and a 21 in. (53.3 cm) self-adhesive Safety Green and bright yellow stripe.
  • Weekly test card supplied to record inspection checks.
  • Certified by CSA to meet the ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 Standard for Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment (as printed in the Haws specification sheet).

Selection and ordering guide

Choose the 8317 when the work area needs both body and eye/face flushing from one point and floor space is available for a free-standing post. Where only the eyes need protection, the wall, pedestal or sink units in the Haws range are smaller; where a stainless pipe is required, the 8133H-type corrosion-resistant shower is a separate datasheet.

The Haws spec sheet states the showerhead must be 82 in. to 96 in. above the standing surface, the shower pattern must be at least 20 in. in diameter at 60 in. above the surface, and the eyewash pattern must sit 33 in. to 53 in. above the surface and 6 in. from the nearest obstruction. Check these figures and your site code before fixing the position.

Installation and operation notes

The manual calls for a minimum 1-1/4 in. IPS supply line at 30-90 psi flowing pressure, an inlet filter where sediment or mineral content is a problem, and anchor bolts 3/8-16 UNC x 6 in. (not supplied) extending 1 in. above floor level through the three 3/8 in. holes on an 8 in. bolt circle. Do not use regular pipe sealant; the drawing names Dow Corning 832 and the manual names PST 565 sealant, so follow the current document.

Flush the supply line thoroughly before connecting. The troubleshooting table links to a clogged flow control from inadequate flushing when eyewash flow is low but shower flow is fine, and to a clogged rubber flow control in the showerhead when the opposite occurs.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

A combination post suits chemical handling areas, battery rooms, laboratories, process plants and workshops across Oman and the GCC where a worker could be splashed on the face and body at once. Delivered water temperature matters: the Haws documents refer to tepid water and offer the 9201E tempering valve and the 9001 alarm as options.

Compatible accessories and related items

Related Haws parts named in the documents include the SP829 showerhead (SP829SS in stainless), SP65 eye/face wash head assembly, SP238 eyewash valve assembly, SP259 one-inch ball valve, SP200 pull rod, SP178 sign, SP185 stripe tape and SP170 test tag.
