3M High Flow HFR Series Filter Cartridge

Description

Large-diameter cartridges that cut filter count on high flows

The 3M High Flow HFR Series is a large-diameter pleated depth filter for liquid streams with high flow requirements. Each 160 mm (6.3 in.) diameter cartridge handles up to 100 m3/h (440 gpm) in the 60 in. length, so one HFR cartridge replaces many conventional 2.5 in. diameter elements. Flow runs from inside to outside, which keeps the captured dirt inside the cartridge when it is removed.

The media is 3M polypropylene microfibre in a lofted structure, designed for process water containing organic contaminants and deformable particles as well as hard solids. The lofted layer resists early blinding of the outer surface, so more of the media depth is used before change-out.

Building the part number

The 3M ordering guide combines the series HFR, the length code (20, 40 or 60), PP for polypropylene media, the grade (A05 to A100) and the O-ring code (A, C or D). 3M notes that not every combination is produced, so confirm the exact part number before ordering. Advanced Pleat Technology staggers the pleats to leave space between them, which increases the usable area compared with tightly packed pleats.

Typical applications

3M lists pre-RO water, condensing water, process and utility water, injection and produced water, ground and reclaimed water, refinery amine sweetening and final product, coolants and OEM part washing. When comparing with other filters, remember that absolute and nominal ratings are not equivalent; nominal ratings follow no industry standard.

Documents and quotation

The attached 3M data sheet includes flow-versus-pressure-drop graphs for each length. For a quotation, state length, grade, O-ring material, the housing in use and the design flow. More cartridges are listed under Filtration Elements.

About brand

Few names turn up on as many maintenance requisitions as 3M: the tape in the electrician's pouch, the respirator at the paint booth, the earmuffs at the compressor house. Seven Star LLC supplies 3M industrial and safety products to buyers in Oman, and the items listed here cover Peltor hearing protection, 6000 series reusable respirators, Speedglas welding helmets, Scotch electrical tape and Liqui-Cel membrane contactors.

3M product lines listed here

The listing follows five separate 3M lines, each with its own part numbering. Peltor X Series earmuffs are graded by attenuation, and the X5A is the over-the-head model with an NRR of 31 dB. The 6000 series half facepiece comes in three sizes (6100 small, 6200 medium, 6300 large) and takes 3M bayonet cartridges and filters, which are ordered separately. Speedglas 9100 is the auto-darkening welding helmet family, supplied with different filter sizes and with or without side windows. Scotch Super 33+ is the vinyl electrical tape most specifications call for by name. Liqui-Cel membrane contactors, such as the EXF-4x13, add or remove dissolved gases in liquid streams.

Where 3M products are used

Hearing, respiratory and welding protection from 3M is specified by HSE departments in refineries, fabrication yards, power plants and construction sites across the GCC. Super 33+ tape is used for primary insulation and jacketing on low-voltage splices and for phase marking in panels. Liqui-Cel contactors sit in water treatment and process skids where oxygen or carbon dioxide has to be stripped from water, for example ahead of boilers or in ultrapure water loops.

Ordering 3M items: what we need

A 3M request is simple to process when the product number is complete. Please send:

  • The 3M product number or model (for example X5A, 6200, Super 33+) and the quantity per pack or case
  • For respirators: facepiece size and the cartridge or filter type for the contaminant
  • For Speedglas: filter version, side windows or not, and any powered air unit it must fit
  • For Liqui-Cel: full contactor code, membrane type, housing material and connections

We check the code against 3M documentation and provide the manufacturer's datasheet on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

What micron ratings does the 3M HFR Series come in?
Six absolute grades: A05, A10, A20, A40, A70 and A100, meaning 5 to 100 µm at Beta 1000 (99.9% removal).
What flow rate can one HFR cartridge handle?
Up to 100 m3/h (440 gpm) for a 60 in. cartridge, 70 m3/h for 40 in. and 35 m3/h for 20 in.
Which housings accept the HFR Series?
3M states the HFR fits standard Pall Ultipleat High Flow HFU filter housings, in addition to 3M High Flow housings.
When should the cartridge be changed?
3M recommends change-out at 2.5 bar (35 psid) differential pressure at 20°C. The maximum forward differential is 3.5 bar at 20°C.
Is the HFR suitable for food and beverage use in the EU?
No. 3M states it is not evaluated for EU Regulation 1935/2004. Materials are listed for food contact under US FDA 21 CFR 174-186.
