Brand: Hughes Safety Showers
Hughes EXP-18GS/45G Unheated Safety Shower with Eye Wash
Description
The Hughes EXP-18GS/45G combines an overhead drench shower and a lidded eye/face wash on one stainless steel stand, the usual first choice for an indoor chemical handling area connected to the plant water main.
One stand for drench shower and eye/face wash
This is a plumbed-in, unheated floor mounted unit for people at risk of chemical splashes. The shower gives a minimum 76 litres per minute and the eye wash 12 litres per minute, the figures printed in the datasheet and in line with the ANSI Z358.1-2014 minimums quoted in the Hughes summary. The shower starts from a pull handle, and pulling the lid of the ASA eye wash down opens its valve; the lid keeps dust and debris off the diffusers.
The datasheet lists three versions of the same unit: EXP-18GS/45G, a DVGW version with a brass shower nozzle, and a green powder coated pipework version, EXP-18GS/45G(PC). The supplied sign carries inserts for mounting on the pipework or the pull handle.

Installing it where it will actually be used
The datasheet limits ambient temperature to 5 to 35 C, so the unit belongs indoors or in a conditioned shelter where the pipework cannot freeze or overheat. EN15154 as summarised by Hughes asks for equipment within about 20 metres, or 10 seconds, of the hazard with no stairs or obstacles in the path, in a clearly lit position, with a safety sign to ISO 7010. It also asks for 400 mm clear around the shower head centre and an entrance width of at least 800 mm.
The inlet is 1 1/4 inch female BSP, which needs a larger branch than a typical eye wash. Pipe it from a main that can supply 76 litres per minute while neighbouring services are running, and flush the line before commissioning.
| Hughes model | Configuration | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| EXP-20GS/45G | Floor mounted shower with body spray and eye wash | Indoor, extra lower-body rinse |
| STD-SD-31K | Multi-nozzle cubicle shower, GRP enclosure | Full-body drench with drain sump |
| LAB-18GS/34G | Floor mounted laboratory shower with eye wash | Laboratories, light duty |
| LAB-23GS/V | Ceiling mounted laboratory shower | Space-limited laboratories |
Options and what to confirm before ordering
Listed options are a walk-on foot panel or foot treadle, shower and eye wash sign, lighting, audible and visual alarm, thermostatic mixing valve, pressure reducing valve, a shower rose, a handheld eye, face and body shower, a modesty curtain, GRP safety barriers and a deluge tester kit. Confirm the supply pressure against the 2 to 6 bar range, the finish and DVGW requirement, the floor fixing and whether tepid water is needed, because the unit has no heating or cooling of its own.
How the Hughes EXP-18GS/45G works
The unit is connected to the plant water main. Pulling the handle opens the stainless steel ball valve and water falls from the overhead shower nozzle. Pulling the lid of the eye wash down opens its own valve and water flows from the diffusers. Both stay open until they are closed by hand.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the EXP-18GS/45G
Fix the stand to the floor in a clear, well lit position with a short and unobstructed path from the hazard. Connect the water inlet and flush the line before use. Test the shower and the eye wash on a regular schedule and record the result. Keep the eye wash lid closed so dust stays off the diffusers.
