Promag 53W / 55S Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Description

Overview

The Promag 53W / 55S is Endress+Hauser’s electromagnetic flowmeter platform combining the Promag W sensor—the specialized sensor for all applications in the water industry—with the Promag S sensor, purpose-built for inhomogeneous, abrasive, and corrosive fluids such as sewage sludge, pulp, and mining slurries. Combined with the Promag 53 or 55 transmitter featuring touch control, a 4-line display, and extended functionality including filling and dosing software, electrode cleaning, and advanced diagnostics, this platform offers the highest accuracy across the most complex and demanding measuring tasks.

Backed by genuine manufacturer documentation, Seven Star LLC proudly offers the Promag 53W / 55S to water and wastewater treatment plants, pulp and paper facilities, and mining and minerals operations across the Sultanate of Oman, Muscat, and the wider GCC. Its robust, completely welded sensor design and international drinking water approvals make it suitable for both potable water networks and the most abrasive industrial slurry applications.

Measurement Principle

The Promag 53W / 55S operates on Faraday’s law of induction: a voltage is induced in a conductor moving through a magnetic field. In electromagnetic measurement, the flowing medium acts as the moving conductor, with the induced voltage proportional to flow velocity detected by two measuring electrodes and transmitted to the amplifier. Flow volume is computed based on the pipe’s diameter, with the constant magnetic field generated by a switched direct current of alternating polarity.

The Promag S variant delivers a bidirectional measuring principle that is virtually independent of pressure, density, temperature, and viscosity, making it ideal for the most demanding applications with high solids content and abrasion. When combined with a density meter, Promag 55S can also determine the throughput of solids in mass, volume, or percentage rates—a valuable capability for sewage treatment and pulp and paper production. The Promag 53W achieves a maximum measurement error of ±0.2%, with volume flow accuracy of ±0.5% o.r. ±1mm/s standard (option: ±0.2% o.r. ±2mm/s).

Engineering Design of the Promag 53W / 55S

The Promag 53W covers nominal diameters from DN 25 to 2000 (1″ to 78″), with a measuring range up to 110,000 m³/h and maximum process pressures from PN6 to PN40 depending on connection standard (also available in Cl 150-300, JIS 10-20K, AWWA Class D, AS 2129 Table E, and AS 4087 PN16). Medium temperature range spans -20°C to +80°C, with the robust, completely welded sensor design ensuring secure, reliable long-term operation and international drinking water approvals.

The Promag 55S sensor, built with industry-optimized liners, enables use in the most challenging surroundings including sewage treatment, pulp and paper, and primary metals industries, with flow measurement up to 9,600 m³/h, operation up to +180°C, and 40 bar (580 psi) maximum pressure. Both variants feature an illuminated, four-line liquid-crystal display with 16 characters per line, onsite operation via touch control, and IP67 (Type 4X) standard protection, with optional IP68 (Type 6P) for remote-mounted sensors.

Liner and Electrode Selection

Specifying a Promag 53W / 55S correctly is largely a question of matching liner and electrode material to the medium. On the Promag 53W, polyurethane lining covers DN 25 to 1200 at −20 to +50 °C while hard rubber covers DN 50 to 2000 at 0 to +80 °C, with measuring, reference and empty-pipe-detection electrodes available in stainless steel 1.4435, Alloy C-22 or tantalum. Sensors from DN 350 to 2000 can be ordered with exchangeable measuring electrodes, so a worn or fouled electrode can be replaced under process conditions without cutting the sensor out of a large-diameter main.

The Promag 55S extends the choice for aggressive duty across DN 15 to 600, offering natural rubber (DN 65 to 600, 0 to +60 °C), hard rubber (DN 65 to 600, 0 to +80 °C), polyurethane, PTFE (DN 15 to 600, −40 to +130 °C) and PFA (DN 25 to 200, −20 to +180 °C) linings, with electrodes in 1.4435, platinum, Alloy C-22, tantalum, titanium Grade 2 or tungsten-carbide coating, plus brush electrode variants for heavily fouling media. Its electrode cleaning circuit (ECC) applies a periodic cleaning voltage to shed deposits in media that would otherwise insulate the electrode surface and drift the reading.

Approvals, Power and Installation Notes

For potable water duty the 53W liners carry KTW, WRAS, NSF and ACS drinking water approvals, and accredited three-point calibration to 0.5% or 0.2% with certification traceable in accordance with ISO 9000 is available from the factory calibration rigs. The transmitter is supplied in a powder-coated die-cast aluminium housing in compact or remote form, rated to an ambient range of −20 to +60 °C with an optional extended low-temperature version, and is tested for electromagnetic compatibility to IEC/EN 61326 and NAMUR recommendation NE 21, with vibration resistance to 2 g per IEC 60068-2-6. Supply options run from 85 to 260 V AC at 45 to 65 Hz or 16 to 62 V DC on the 53W and 20 to 260 V AC or 20 to 64 V DC on the 55S. Correct potential equalisation matters as much as correct sizing on the Promag 53W / 55S: in plastic or internally lined metal pipework, ground disks or a copper ground cable of at least 6 mm² must bond the medium to the sensor, and where empty pipe detection is active on a remote-mounted sensor the connecting cable is limited to 10 m.

About brand
Level, flow and pressure measurement account for most of the Endress+Hauser instruments engineers ask us about, and each device is defined by the order code on its nameplate. Endress+Hauser, founded in 1953 and based in Reinach, Switzerland, builds process instrumentation for liquids, gases and bulk solids. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Endress+Hauser (E+H) flowmeters, radar and vibronic level instruments, pressure and temperature transmitters and liquid analysis equipment for plants in Oman and the GCC.

Endress+Hauser product families on this page

Level is the largest group: Micropilot free-space radar (FMR10B, FMR62 and the FMR67 for bulk solids, all 80 GHz), Levelflex guided radar (FMP50, and the FMP55 for interface measurement), the Liquiphant FTL51 vibronic point level switch and the Prosonic S FMU90 ultrasonic transmitter. Flow covers Proline Promag electromagnetic flowmeters (Promag P 300, Promag W 400) and the Prowirl F 200 vortex meter. Pressure is represented by the Cerabar PMP51B, temperature by the iTEMP TMT82 HART transmitter. For liquid analysis the listing has the Liquiline CM444 multiparameter transmitter and Memosens sensors such as the CPS11E pH electrode.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

Water and wastewater plants rely on Promag W meters, radar level and Liquiline analysis. Oil and gas, chemical and power plants specify Levelflex and Micropilot on tanks and separators, Prowirl on steam and gas, and Cerabar on process lines. Food and pharmaceutical producers use hygienic versions of the same families, and cement and mining sites use the FMR67 on silos.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

Send the order code and, for a replacement, the serial number from the nameplate. The extended order code is better still, because it spells out every option. Without a code we need the medium, pressure and temperature, measuring span, process connection, wetted materials, output signal or fieldbus, power supply, display and the hazardous area approval required. For flowmeters add line size and liner, for radar the tank height and nozzle size.
