testo 340 Industrial Flue Gas Analyzer

Description

Overview

The testo 340 is a handy, easy-to-operate emission measuring instrument for industrial combustion. Its compact one-piece design and reliable technology make it a practical tool for commissioning, service and maintenance, and for test measurements on industrial burners, stationary industrial engines, gas turbines and thermal processes. It is equipped with an O2 sensor as standard, and up to three further gas sensors can be configured individually to suit each measurement task.

Seven Star LLC supplies the testo 340 to maintenance teams, boiler and burner service companies, generator operators and plant laboratories in Oman and the GCC. Engineers in our Muscat office help customers select the right sensor combination, probes and accessories, and we provide engineering support for users in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah.

Measurement Principle

A regulated diaphragm pump draws the flue gas at 0.6 l/min through the probe and hose into the instrument, where electrochemical cells measure O2, CO, COlow, NO, NOlow, NO2 and SO2. The CO cells are H2 compensated and a replaceable filter on the NO sensor blocks SO2 cross-gas. A thermocouple in the probe measures flue gas temperature, and integrated sensors measure draught, differential pressure and absolute pressure. From these values the testo 340 calculates efficiency, flue gas loss, exhaust gas dew point and CO2.

The distinctive feature of this instrument is its measuring range extension. Single dilution by factor 5 allows unrestricted measurement on one sensor at high concentrations, for example CO from 700 to 50,000 ppm, while dilution of all sensors by factor 2 extends every channel at once. The extension also protects the sensors from overload, which is valuable on engines and process heaters where CO or NO peaks can exceed the normal range. Testo recommends limiting continuous NO2 and SO2 measurements to two hours to avoid absorption effects.

Engineering Design of the testo 340

The testo 340 is a single handheld unit weighing 960 g and measuring 283 × 103 × 65 mm, with a TPE and PC housing rated IP40. A graphic display of 160 × 240 pixels shows four readings at once, and the keypad gives direct access to print, start and save functions. Gas sensors are mounted under a rear cover, so users can swap or add sensors in the field without returning the analyzer to a workshop.

Power comes from a 3.7 V, 2.4 Ah battery block or the 6.3 V mains unit. The memory is organised in up to 100 folders with up to 10 sites per folder and 200 logs per site, and 10 user-defined fuels, including test gas, can be stored. Data can be transferred to a PC using the easyEmission software, printed on the Testo fast printer by infrared, or viewed on an Android smartphone or tablet using the Bluetooth option and the free app.

Key Features

The testo 340 combines the following functions in a portable package:

  • O2 sensor as standard and three freely configurable sensors from CO, COlow, NO, NOlow, NO2 and SO2.
  • Measuring range extension by single dilution (factor 5) or dilution of all sensors (factor 2) for high gas concentrations.
  • Integrated draught, differential pressure and absolute pressure measurement, plus flow velocity with Pitot tubes.
  • Calculated efficiency, flue gas loss, dew point and CO2 for combustion optimisation.
  • Large selection of modular, engine and industrial probes for flue gas temperatures up to 1,800 °C.
  • Bluetooth option for remote operation from an Android smartphone or tablet.
  • Structured memory with folders, sites and logs and 10 user-defined fuels.
  • TUV-tested design according to EN 50379, as stated in the Testo data sheet.

Industrial Applications

Testo proposes typical configurations for different jobs: a low-budget entry kit with CO for basic emission checks, a CO, NO and NO2 kit with an engine probe for monitoring and adjusting stationary industrial engines, a CO, NO and SO2 kit with a 700 mm probe for burners and furnaces, and a COlow, NOlow and NO2 kit for gas turbine measurements. These sets show how one testo 340 can be adapted to quite different combustion equipment.

In Oman the instrument is popular with teams that maintain standby and prime diesel generators, gas engines at remote production sites, industrial boilers in food and beverage plants and process heaters in the Sohar and Duqm zones. Seven Star LLC supplies the testo 340 as a trusted supplier and supports the wider instrument kit used by these teams, including the ABB Endura AZ40 oxygen and CO analyzer, the Druck DPI 620G Genii multifunction calibrator and the Beamex MC6 field calibrator.

About brand
Testo, founded in 1957 and based in Titisee-Neustadt, Germany, makes portable measuring instruments, and its flue gas analyzers are standard tools for burner technicians and emissions testers. The same company builds instruments for temperature, humidity, pressure and air velocity. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Testo flue gas analyzers, probes and gas sensors for boiler, engine and turbine work in Oman, including the testo 340 and testo 350 listed here.

Testo flue gas analyzers listed here

The testo 340 is a handheld analyzer for industrial combustion checks on burners, boilers and engines. The testo 350 is the larger system: a control unit that the operator holds and a separate analyzer box that contains the gas sensors and gas preparation. It is used for longer emission measurements on engines, turbines and process plant. Both are fitted with sensors chosen for the gases to be measured.

Ordering Testo analyzers: what we need

Testo sells analyzers by order number, and the instrument, sensors and probes are separate lines. Send the gases to be measured (O2, CO, NO, NO2, SO2 and others), the flue gas temperature, the probe length, and any printer or software required. For spare sensors send the analyzer model and serial number. GCC emissions testers should name the reporting standard they follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sensors can the testo 340 hold?
The instrument comes with an O2 sensor and needs at least one more gas sensor to operate. A maximum of three additional sensors can be fitted, chosen from CO, COlow, NO, NOlow, NO2 and SO2.
What is the measuring range extension on the testo 340?
Single dilution by factor 5 extends one sensor, for example CO up to 50,000 ppm, and dilution of all sensors by factor 2 extends every channel. This allows measurements at high concentrations on engines and process burners without overloading the cells.
Which testo 340 configuration suits gas turbine measurements?
Testo suggests CO, NOlow and NO2 sensors with an engine probe for turbine work, because the low-range NO sensor gives 0.1 ppm resolution for the low NOx levels typical of modern turbines.
Can testo 340 data be transferred to a PC or phone?
Readings can be transferred to a PC with the easyEmission software and USB cable, printed with the Testo infrared printer, or viewed and controlled from an Android device when the Bluetooth option is fitted.
Does Seven Star LLC supply the testo 340 in Oman?
Seven Star LLC supplies testo 340 analyzers, spare sensors and probes to customers in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat.
