Overview

Metrohm 905 Titrando is a high-end potentiometric titrator designed for laboratories that need more than a single-purpose benchtop unit. Metrohm lists it as a titrator for use with intelligent iTrode electrodes, with one galvanically isolated measuring interface and up to four dosing systems of the 800 Dosino type. It can run as a stand-alone titrator with the 900 Touch Control, or be controlled from a PC with Metrohm OMNIS software or tiamo software, and the same Titrando platform can grow from a single titration cell to a fully automated solution in a laboratory network.

Titration and Dosing Principle

In potentiometric titration the Metrohm 905 Titrando adds a titrant of known concentration to the sample and follows the electrode potential. The equivalence point appears as an inflection in the curve, and the titrator calculates the result from the volume of titrant consumed. Because the endpoint is found electrically, the method works for coloured and turbid samples, and it can be validated and documented in a way that colour indicators cannot.

The Metrohm 905 Titrando evaluates titrations in dynamic (DET), monotonic (MET) and set endpoint (SET) modes, measures concentration with ion-selective electrodes, and offers dosing functions with monitoring and Liquid Handling. Metrohm notes that the Karl Fischer and STAT modes belong to the 906 and 907 Titrando models, so the Metrohm 905 Titrando is the right choice when the workload is potentiometric titration and monitored dosing rather than water determination. Dosing itself is performed by the patented Dosino, which screws directly onto a standard reagent bottle and therefore needs no extra bench space.

Engineering Design of the Metrohm 905 Titrando

The Metrohm 905 Titrando is built from a compact base unit that connects to its peripherals through the Metrohm Serial Bus. It offers four MSB connectors for additional stirrers or dosing systems, one galvanically isolated measuring interface for intelligent iTrodes, and a USB connector. The Dosino drive reads the data chip in each 807 Dosing Unit, so the titrator knows the reagent, titer, last titer determination and shelf-life data and can run a plausibility check against the selected method. Dosing units come in 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 mL sizes with ceramic valves, glass cylinders for titrants and ETFE for auxiliary solutions and aggressive media, and the resolution is 10,000 steps per cylinder volume.

The Metrohm 905 Titrando platform is expandable. According to the Metrohm brochure the basic unit can be upgraded to a system that controls up to 12 burets with six galvanically separated measuring interfaces, and an 867 pH Module or 856 Conductivity Module can be attached as additional measuring modules. Four 801 Magnetic Stirrers or four 802 Rod Stirrers, together with an 804 Titration Stand, can be connected, and an 814 USB Sample Processor, 815 Robotic USB Sample Processor XL or 898 XYZ Sample Changer connects through the USB port. Pt1000 or NTC temperature sensors are supported, and two USB slave ports plus an optional RS-232 interface link balances, printers, barcode readers and PCs.
