H2scan HY-GUARD RS Lithium-Ion Battery Hydrogen Safety Monitor
Description
Fast hydrogen detection for lithium-ion battery rooms with a facility display
HY-GUARD RS is the lithium-ion variant of the H2scan HY-GUARD hydrogen monitor and is documented together with the HY-SIGHT controller and display as an integrated hydrogen safety system. It continuously monitors hydrogen with self-calibration in standby power and energy storage battery applications, and automatically triggers ventilation, shutdown and alarms.
The datasheet quotes a 10 second response from air to 5% H2 for the first alarm. HY-SIGHT adds a 2.1 inch 480×480 IPS display with rotary encoder, supports up to four HY-GUARD RS sensors, offers Modbus RTU over RS-485 and a USB-C service port, and brings facility-wide visualization of alarms.

Applications and installation notes
The use case is lithium-ion battery safety. The manufacturer provides the datasheet for energy storage and standby power installations, where hydrogen can appear from off-gassing in abnormal battery events. A fast alarm at 1.0% H2 and a high alarm at 2.0% H2 give the safety system two stages for ventilation and shutdown.
Every certification line on this datasheet is marked pending, so confirm status with the manufacturer before specifying the unit for a regulated installation. Up to four sensors can share one HY-SIGHT, which suits a room with several battery racks. Look under fire and gas detectors for other detectors.
RS compared with the standard HY-GUARD
The RS shares the housing size, range and supply options with the standard HY-GUARD but responds in 10 seconds instead of 30 seconds and is paired with the HY-SIGHT controller. For lead acid rooms without a controller requirement, the standard HY-GUARD or HY-ALERTA 5020 may suffice.
System layout and signal planning for a lithium-ion room
A common layout is one HY-GUARD RS per rack row or cabinet, all connected to a single HY-SIGHT, which supports up to four sensors. Where a room needs more than four points, additional HY-SIGHT units are needed (our inference from the four-sensor limit).
HY-SIGHT can be powered from 85 to 264 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz or from 12 to 48 VDC at 5 W, and offers Modbus RTU over RS-485 for the building management or SCADA link and a USB-C port for service. Its operating range of 3 to 50°C is narrower than the sensor range of -25 to 50°C, so keep the display inside a conditioned space or enclosure.
Both devices list IEC 61010, CE, FCC Part 15, REACH and RoHS as pending certifications. Because of this, we recommend asking the manufacturer for the current certificate status and any additional approvals demanded by the local authority or insurer before you design the installation.
Because the standard alarm points of 1.0% and 2.0% H2 are far below the 4% lower explosive limit of hydrogen in air (general engineering figure), the first alarm leaves a wide margin for ventilation to act before the room approaches a flammable mixture.
Document control: the datasheet used here is H2scan document 90000316, which combines the HY-GUARD RS and the HY-SIGHT display. H2scan lists a manual and a family brochure separately, and we suggest asking for both, together with current certificate status, before you design the installation or write the specification.
Lithium-ion rooms and container systems
Lithium-ion cells release hydrogen among other gases at the start of thermal runaway, often before smoke or flame are visible, which is why a fast hydrogen detector is used as an early warning in battery energy storage systems. General engineering note (not from the datasheet): place HY-GUARD RS sensors high in the room or container, above the racks and near the exhaust path, link alarm 1 to ventilation and alarm 2 to shutting down charging and alerting the fire system, and connect up to four sensors to a HY-SIGHT display at the room entrance so that staff can check status before entering.
Check the site fire strategy and any local authority requirements for energy storage rooms before finalising the layout, because detection is one layer alongside ventilation, fire suppression and battery management. For containerised systems in Oman and the GCC, the container cooling must keep the sensor within its 15 to 40°C rated range, and the cable routes for RS-485 and relay wiring should be planned during container design rather than added on site.

About brand
H2scan is an American maker of solid-state hydrogen sensors and analysers, founded in 2002 and based in Valencia, California. Its first product commercialised a wide-range hydrogen sensor developed at Sandia National Laboratories. H2scan's monitors measure hydrogen directly in process streams, battery rooms and power transformers.
Seven Star LLC lists H2scan hydrogen process analyzers, area monitors and transformer monitors for buyers in Oman and the GCC, and we answer each inquiry against the manufacturer's own datasheet.
