H2scan HY-OPTIMA 700B General Purpose In-Line Hydrogen Analyzer
Description
A compact 24 V hydrogen analyzer for non-hazardous process lines
HY-OPTIMA 700B is the general purpose member of the H2scan in-line hydrogen analyzer range. It is a small solid-state unit, 236 mm long and 0.4 kg, that reads hydrogen directly in a process gas stream without reference gas, carrier gas or consumables, and with no cross sensitivity to other gases according to the datasheet. The 700B series contains models 710B, 720B, 730B and 740B.
Communication is by a 4-20 mA analog output or by RS232 or RS422 serial, and the unit includes a 1 A / 30 VDC SPDT relay output. Power is 10 to 26 VDC at 10 W, which suits an analyzer cabinet or skid supply. The adapter fitting is 1/2 in MNPT.
The datasheet states that once installed and field calibrated the analyzer typically needs only a quick calibration about every three months with readily available primary standard gases spanning the expected range.

Model 710B, 720B, 730B and 740B compared
Models 710B, 730B and 740B are intended for dry gas streams where hydrogen is always present and can be exposed to hydrogen continuously. Model 720B is for processes where hydrogen appears only occasionally, for short periods, in an air, oxygen or nitrogen background, such as during a leak or upset.
| Model | H2 range | H2 must be present | CO / H2S limits | T90 response | Accuracy | Calibration gas background |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 710B | 0.1% to 10% | Yes | CO below 100 ppm; H2S below 20 ppm | Below 90 s | 0.15% | N2 |
| 720B | 0.4% to 5% | No | 0; 0 | Below 60 s | 0.3% | O2, N2 |
| 730B | 0.5% to 100% | Yes | CO below 100 ppm; H2S below 1000 ppm | Below 60 s | 0.3% (to 10%); 1.0% (10 to 100%) | N2 |
| 740B | 0.5% to 100% | Yes | CO up to 20%; H2S up to 3% | Below 90 s | 0.3% (to 10%); 1.0% (10 to 100%) | N2 |
All accuracy figures are absolute, assume a dry stream at 25°C and constant pressure, and are in addition to errors in the calibration gases.
Where the 700B fits in oil, gas and power plants
The datasheet lists fuel cells (anode and cathode side), hydrogen in natural gas or biomethane, air separation, steam methane reforming, electrolysis process streams, laboratory research, metals annealing, semiconductors and oil hydrogenation. In a GCC context this points to hydrogen blending trials, electrolyzer skids, annealing furnaces and utilities where the analyzer sits in a non-classified, sheltered location.
Because the 700B is general purpose, it is not an alternative to the explosion proof 2700 series when the analyzer itself must be installed in a classified area; for that case compare the gas analyzer systems range or ask us for the 2700 or the intrinsically safe 5330 series.
Commissioning checklist and how it compares with sister analyzers
Before installing, confirm four things from the datasheet: the stream is dry (all performance figures assume a dry stream at 25°C and constant pressure), carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide stay under the limit of the chosen model, the line pressure sits between 0.95 and 1.1 ATM absolute for best results, and the flow through the sensor is between 0.1 and 10 slpm. If the stream pressure varies, note that the 700B figures assume constant pressure whereas the 2700 series figures assume pressure compensation, which is a practical reason to prefer the 2700 on variable-pressure lines.
Against the other H2scan process analyzers, the 700B is the smallest and lightest at 0.4 kg and the only one in this group powered from a nominal 24 V supply with RS232 or RS422 serial. The explosion proof 2700 series weighs 2.7 kg and runs from 90 to 240 VAC, while the HY-OPTIMA 5232 weighs 0.75 kg, adds self-calibration and Modbus RS-485, and is limited to 0.4 to 5% hydrogen.
Plan for the three-monthly calibration visit: primary standard gases spanning the operating range are required, and the background gas must match the model (nitrogen for 710B, 730B and 740B; oxygen or nitrogen for 720B).
Sample system and calibration planning
Because the 700B works best at 0.95 to 1.1 ATM absolute and 0.1 to 10 slpm, it is usually installed after a pressure-reducing sample conditioning panel rather than directly in a high-pressure line. General engineering note (not from the datasheet): the panel normally includes a filter, a pressure regulator, a flow indicator and a vent line, plus a connection for calibration gas so that the 90-day check can be done without removing the analyzer. Keep the process gas above its dew point all the way to the sensor, since the humidity limit is below 95% RH non-condensing.
For the quarterly calibration, choose primary standard gases that bracket the normal operating concentration, and log each result so that drift trends can be seen. In hot plant areas in Oman and the GCC, place the analyzer inside a shaded or air-conditioned analyzer cabinet so that the electronics and the sample stay within their temperature limits during summer.
