Endress+Hauser PMP50 Cerabar HART Pressure Transmitter

Description

Endress+Hauser PMP50 Cerabar HART industrial pressure transmitter

The Endress+Hauser PMP50 is the industrial-grade Cerabar transmitter with a metallic process membrane, HART communication and a dual-compartment housing. It measures pressure and pressure-based level in liquids and gases up to 400 bar, with reference accuracy up to ±0.05 % and a response time below 100 ms. Seven Star LLC supplies the PMP50 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, typically for process, power and oil and gas duties.

The ordering structure builds on that base. You select the cell (1, 4, 10, 40, 100 or 400 bar, gauge or absolute), the accuracy grade (Standard or Platinum), the membrane material (316L or Alloy C276, with a gold-coated option for hydrogen), the housing (aluminium or stainless steel dual compartment), the approvals and the process connection, which can be a direct thread or flange or a diaphragm seal system.

How the PMP50 works

The PMP50 uses proven sensor and software modules from the wider Cerabar line. Process pressure deflects the metal membrane and the fill fluid transmits it to the sensor, or, with a diaphragm seal, to a seal diaphragm and capillary or direct-mounted seal, so the electronics stay away from hot or aggressive media. Pre-assembled seal systems are pressure and leak tested before delivery, which simplifies installation.

The transmitter has a colour display with a magnetic button operating without opening the housing, hardware and software write protection, a guided commissioning wizard and a service interface (CDI) for a PC. Vacuum resistance is stated per cell and fill oil in the datasheet, and a ceramic membrane is advised for duty at the limit.

Where the PMP50 fits and related Cerabar parts

Between the Cerabar PMP43 (hygienic) and the lower-cost PMP21 transducer, the PMP50 is the general-purpose process transmitter with the widest approval list: ATEX, FM, NEPSI, UKCA, INMETRO, KC and JPN, with marine classes ABS, LR, BV, DNV and CCS available. It also supports NACE MR0175 and MR0103 declarations, oxygen-cleaned versions and corrosion testing with a 3.1 material certificate. Operating tools are DeviceCare, FieldCare, DTM, AMS and PDM.

When a customer asks for a replacement of an older HART Cerabar, compare the output range, approval and process connection codes on the nameplate rather than relying on the model name alone.

Selecting the PMP50: ordering checklist

  • Cell, principle and the minimum span needed; check turn down against accuracy grade.
  • Process connection or diaphragm seal system, including capillary length and fill oil.
  • Membrane and wetted material for the medium; Alloy C276 or gold coating for special media.
  • Housing material: stainless steel is recommended for corrosive and maritime sites.
  • Approvals: area classification, marine class and any SIL requirement.
  • Certificates: 3.1 material, NACE declaration, corrosion test, oxygen cleaning.
  • Electrical entry: M20 gland (plastic, brass or 316L), M20, G½ or NPT½ thread.

PMP50 installation, commissioning and maintenance

Mount per the standard rules for gas, steam and liquids, and insulate diaphragm-seal systems only up to the maximum insulation height printed on the device. For vertical mounting the permitted ambient temperature falls as the process temperature rises toward +125 °C, so check the derating curve.

  • Use the guided wizard for range, units and damping.
  • Lock the configuration with the hardware or software write protection once accepted.
  • On seal systems, correct the zero for the oil head of the capillary after final installation.
  • Consider the overvoltage protection option where installations are exposed to lightning.

Keep records of the loop test, because the safety manual assumes proof tests for SIL use. Check the cable glands and cover seals at each turnaround.

Typical PMP50 applications in Oman and the GCC

The PMP50 is a natural fit for upstream and downstream hydrocarbon plants: separator and compressor pressure, pipeline and wellhead monitoring, and fuel-gas and flare headers, where the wide approval list matters. In power and utilities it serves boiler feedwater, steam and condensate lines, and in desalination it covers high-pressure reverse-osmosis feed. Diaphragm-seal versions handle viscous, crystallising or hot media in petrochemical units. Stainless housings with sealed glands protect against salt fog on offshore and coastal installations, and sun shields help where aluminium housings sit in direct desert sun.

PMP50 accuracy by cell

Cell Standard Platinum
1 bar ±0.065 % to TD 2.5:1 ±0.05 % to TD 5:1
4, 10, 40, 100 bar ±0.065 % to TD 10:1; ±0.0065 % × TD above ±0.05 % to TD 5:1
400 bar ±0.1 % to TD 5:1 ±0.065 % to TD 5:1

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.

Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need

The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.

FAQ

Questions about the Endress+Hauser PMP50 Cerabar HART Pressure

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What measuring ranges does the PMP50 cover?
Measuring cells are 1, 4, 10, 40, 100 and 400 bar, in gauge or absolute form (15 to 6,000 psi). Standard turn down can reach 100:1 and the Platinum grade is limited to 5:1.
02How accurate is the PMP50?
The Standard grade reaches up to ±0.065 % and the Platinum grade up to ±0.05 %. The 400 bar cell is slightly less accurate, at ±0.1 % Standard and ±0.065 % Platinum.
03Can the PMP50 be used with diaphragm seals?
Yes. Seals allow process temperatures up to 400 °C with high-temperature oil at 1 bar abs or more, and fill oils covering –40 to +250 °C (silicone) and –20 to +400 °C (high-temperature). Seal errors are calculated separately from the transmitter accuracy.
04Is the PMP50 suitable for safety instrumented systems?
The 4–20 mA devices were developed to IEC 61508 and may be used to monitor pressure and level up to SIL 3. The Functional Safety Manual holds the safety data and settings.
05What supply voltage does the PMP50 need?
Ex d, Ex e and non-Ex versions run on 10.5 to 35 V DC and Ex i versions on 10.5 to 30 V DC. The HART acyclic response is typically 590 ms, and the supply current should be limited to 500 mA.
