Endress+Hauser PMD63B Deltabar Diaphragm Seal DP Transmitter
Description
Endress+Hauser PMD63B Deltabar diaphragm seal differential pressure transmitter
The Endress+Hauser PMD63B is the diaphragm seal version of the Deltabar B generation: a digital differential pressure transmitter that is connected to the process through one or two welded diaphragm seals, using a capillary line or a temperature isolator on each side. That construction lets it measure level, differential pressure and flow on hot, viscous, corrosive or hygienic media that would block or damage the impulse lines of a normal transmitter. Seven Star LLC supplies the PMD63B in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.
Differential ranges run from 100 mbar to 40 bar (1.5 to 600 psi) with process temperatures up to 250 °C (482 °F) at the seal, and communication options include 4 to 20 mA analog, HART, PROFIBUS PA and PROFINET over Ethernet-APL, with optional Bluetooth.

The figures are taken from the Endress+Hauser Technical Information for the Deltabar PMD63B. The overpressure limit of the device is generally 160 bar on one side and 240 bar on both sides, and the ratings of the selected seal, flange and fill fluid can lower this.
How the PMD63B measures
Each diaphragm seal membrane transfers its pressure through an incompressible fill fluid to an internal membrane on the measuring cell. The two internal membranes deflect, and a second fill fluid carries the pressures to the opposite faces of the silicon measuring element, where a resistance bridge produces a signal that depends on the differential pressure. Because the system is welded, there are no screwed joints in the oil circuit that could leak.
The design decides the behaviour. Seals with temperature isolators keep the electronics cool on hot lines; seals with capillaries decouple the transmitter from vibration and place it where operators can reach it; the TempC membrane reduces the temperature error of the whole system. Capillaries also attenuate pressure shocks. On tall vessels the two seals on different elevations measure the hydrostatic difference, and h = Δp / (ρg) gives the level.
PMD63B seal system configurations
| Configuration | High pressure side | Low pressure side |
|---|---|---|
| Seal on one side | Temperature isolator or capillary | Standard side flange connection with seal material FKM, EPDM, PTFE or FFKM |
| Seals on both sides, isolator plus capillary | Temperature isolator | Capillary |
| Seals on both sides, two capillaries | Capillary of one length | Capillary of a different length if required |
Capillary lengths on the two sides can be chosen separately to suit the installation, which reduces costs and eases fitting. Support the capillary and keep its bending radius at or above 100 mm (3.94 in). Armour is available in 316L, PVC-coated and PTFE-jacketed versions.
Process connections. The seal side offers flush-membrane flanges to EN 1092-1 and ASME B16.5, and hygienic and special connections: universal process adapter, Tri-Clamp, Varivent, DRD DN 50, SMS nozzle with union nut, DIN 11851 taper adapter, NEUMO BioControl and sanitary tank spud, mostly available with the TempC membrane. The flange raised face is made of the same material as the membrane. Flange standard, size and rating determine the maximum working pressure of the complete device.

Where the PMD63B fits in the Deltabar family
For clean fluids at moderate temperature the PMD50 and PMD55B are simpler and lower in cost, since they work with conventional impulse piping. The PMD63B is chosen when impulse piping would freeze, clog, corrode or leak, for example on viscous crude, polymer, sludge or hot oil. A pressure-only alternative with the same operating concept is the Cerabar PMP63B, and for pressure measurement with a seal on older platforms the PMP55 is also used.
PMD63B installation, commissioning and maintenance
Treat the PMD63B as a matched system. The two capillaries should run together and see the same ambient temperature, and the transmitter should be mounted with a bracket on hot lines. After installation set the range and damping, and zero the device with the process at a known level or with both seals at equal pressure. Never remove a seal from the capillary or the transmitter; the system is filled and welded at the factory, and opening it destroys calibration.
Plan verification with the Heartbeat package, which checks the transmitter without stopping the process. Do not exceed the 85 °C seal limit on the low-pressure side. Record the HP and LP capillary lengths on the maintenance file, because a replacement must match them.
Typical PMD63B applications in Oman and the GCC
The PMD63B is used on columns and separators in oil and gas, on hot oil and thermal fluid vessels, in desalination brine heaters and sludge lines, and in chemical and polymer plants where product can solidify in ordinary impulse lines. The capillary variants suit tall vessels, flare knock-out drums and storage tanks in hot, dusty conditions. Where ambient temperatures rise above 60 °C, shade the transmitter and the capillaries and check the armour limits, since PVC coating reduces the permitted ambient range.

Where Endress+Hauser instruments are used
In Oman and the GCC, Endress+Hauser instruments are common in oil and gas production and processing, refineries and petrochemicals, desalination and water networks, wastewater treatment, power plants and food and beverage plants. Coriolis meters measure hydrocarbon and chemical flows, electromagnetic meters cover water and wastewater, radar transmitters handle tank and silo level, and Liquiline analysers monitor water quality. Proline 300 and 500 flowmeters include Heartbeat Technology for in-situ verification, which reduces the need to remove a meter for checks.
Ordering Endress+Hauser instruments: what we need
The order code on the nameplate (for example PMP71-1QA1S11RDADU) defines every option: measuring range, process connection, materials, output, approvals and display. Send it with the serial number; Endress+Hauser can retrieve the original configuration from the serial number. For a new instrument add the medium, operating and design pressure and temperature, range, line size or tank geometry, process connection, wetted materials, output or protocol (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus) and the hazardous-area approval required. Older models such as Promass 80/83 or Micropilot M are replaced by current Proline or 80 GHz Micropilot devices.
